Street kids, taxi, women

by mr.denmark

Becarefull about the street kids, even I allso feel sad for them, then it is not your job to save them, stay away from them, they can attack you and rob you, if you want to help then give money to a organistion. The taxi company are really bad here, agree on a price before you get in. I will write the name of some of the good companys later.Becarefull guys Romania are that country in Europe whit most Hepatitis, and ADIS, so dont forget your condoms. Dont go whit them home before you are really sure about them, many girls are part of a group and they will rob you.

Self catering accom

by Stevib

In the old part of Bucharest a great deal of the old Bohemian style villas are being refurbished and turned into flats and apartments for self-catering accommodation. They are really lovely, very ornate, solid and nicely decorated. In close proximity to the centre of the city. However the down side is the emergency escape system in the event of fire, fire fighting equipment or detector alarms are non-existent.Look closely at the room or apartment you are given work out how you would get out in event of a fire and if necessary point this out to the proprietor and move rooms. Take a battery-operated fire alarm with you.

Watch out your valuables

by hydronetta

I got a lot of useful info about pickpocketing in Romania. I should stress out though that Romania is generally a very safe country and I felt no harassment at all during my stay there. The only threat is that you might "loose" some valuables like cameras etc if you are not careful enough. It is almost unknown that you'll face any threat of your life. The main area that professional pickpockets act are train stations, public transport or main touristic attractions. The reason is simple: naive tourists start admiring around without paying attention to their valuables. So exersice simple measures: keep a careful eye on your valuables, never accept help from strangers. Don't get paranoid though. Romanians are kind and helpful and don't think everyone is a potential pickpocket

Exchange rates

by hydronetta

There are numerous exchange offices in every city in Romania. Note that exchange rates are not fixed in exchange bureaus and prices may differ. You have to look around a bit before you choose where to exchange your money. In general avoid changing money at the airport, the rate is the poorest I saw. The same accounts in train stations. The best you can do is to change as little money as possible to be able to move around and then ask where are other exchange offices in the area

Watch out for the muggers!

by GCoop

I was walking down the street to a great little Irish pub that I found, when a guy on the street picked me as his "mark". Thankfully, a long hard stare in his direction, while he was following me, let him now that I was not going to be an easy target!

Taking a Taxi from Otoperi Airpot...

by cheyennepress

As soon as you step off the plane in Bucharest, you are going to be greated by a swarm of taxi drivers trying to rip you off. Do NOT attempt to barter with them. I had a driver who I got to agree to take me to Gara du Nord train station for 50 Lei. When we arrived, he demanded 130 or he'd call the cops. My luggage was locked in his trunk, he had turned on a rather covert meter, and I wasn't about to involve the police. Lesson learned. If you don't know much Romanian (I'm learning now!), your best bet is to walk to the arrivals section of the airport. It's not far, and there you're going to be coming across taxis who dropped people off (i.e. not ripping them off). Look at the rates on the side of the door. When I was there, it was about 1.40 Lei/km. Or about 25-30 Lei to Gara du Nord. Check several prices, and when you feel comfortable, take the cab. Also, when you arrive in the airport,...

Careful with Exchange offices!!!!

by SzaraManisha

The best way to exchange money is to do it in a bank. Banks are however not every day opened. Then one has to be careful for small exchange offices which for the first sight look ok.You go in, you change money and then you relise that you got less than supposed. But everything is legal -on the top there are 2 columns - on the right the rate for selling and on the left....the rate of the national bank for buying. If you looked at the bottom - there is information about the rate in this particular exchange office. Of course nowhere is written anything in english...

Roads

by SzaraManisha

Roads are ok in Romania as long as you are driving during the day and as long as it is not the road from Brasov to Sighisoara. At night on the roadsoutside the cities is totally dark, so when you dont know the way, you'd better make a tent and sleep there till the morning.Another thing is the road from Brasov. It is a nice road, with nice view, but you can be almost sure that you will get your window broken (when you drive by car). On the road there are little stones, there is no speed limit, no warning and no matter if you drive slow or fast - anyway the stone may break your window. And sometimes the roads break itselves :)

Extreme hospitality.

by steinninn

If you are walking as a male as an obviouse turist (helps if you are blond with a huge backpack on your back) past M. Vteazu nr 10 in Timisoara you might just get invited by a few female to sit with the in theyr garden. If you speak German you'll probably get invited in for some coffee and then they might even offer you to stay for a few nights because they have a free bed.It seemed all to good to be true, so I left promising to come back. Knowing that if I didn't, they wouldn't let me leave. As I left they started telling me how sick they were and how short on money they were.I've asked a few locals afterwards, and they had never heard of this happening in Romania before. It's unlikely, but it might happen to you, and maybe not in Timisoara. If you nead a free bead, it might help trying to walk past that house. But I can't be responsible of how they end up riping you off. Just be sure...

becareful where you walk and drive

by kelmck23

There is really nothing to worry about when going to romania. I wouldnt advise walking around town at night if you are alone. There was afew times when I was with my guy friend that it got alittle scary. Also when going through small gypsy villages becareful and lock your doors. Even my friend who lives there gets a little scared going through. We had sticks thrown at are car, and many many dirty looks. Oh and one more thing...WATCH where you walk, there are large drain hole that are hard to see that are not covered.
