Driving obstacles

by Dabs

Where do I start? Long winding roads through the mountains, further complicated by cows and sheep crossing the road and rural folks riding in horse drawn carts. Throw in a few stray dogs and drivers that pass whether or not they can see (but they always use that blinker!).In the city there are roundabouts I still can't figure out plus pedestrian crosswalks that sometimes people stop at and sometimes don't. I'm shocked we didn't see more accidents than we did.

Driving in Romania

by Shockgirl

Driving is the only way to see everything in Romania you should see, because no public transportation goes everywhere and in a taxi, you take your life into your own hands. The main highways are OK. Watch for radar politia at the top of hills. They sit four to a car and stand in the middle of the road, politely directing you to the shoulder. They get four or five cars pulled over and take turns writing you up. They were nice and let me off - twice. If you leave the main roads, prepare to add hours to your trip, either in lack of speed or the time it takes you to change a tire. Potholes are extreme with whole areas of road impassible but at the slowest speed. You may encounter a shepherd driving a big flock of sheep down the middle of the road and there are more horse carts. Big trucks take these roads because they are shorter, so watch for them barreling down the mountains. One missed my...

WARNING about Ambasador Hotel

by WorldTravelMan

Ambasador has good rooms and location. I had an early flight out of Bucuresti, I asked the front desk clerk if he would mind arranging for FlyTaxi to pick me up early that next morning and take me to the airport. When I was ready to leave the next morning, I was greeted friendly and told that the hotel had a car available to take me to the airport and it was better than the FlyTaxi. Then when we arrived at the airport, he demanded payment of nearly 1.000.00,00 lei. (the FlyTaxi would have charged less than 1/3 of this cost). This type of Dishonesty merits people avoiding this hotel.

Ambasador Hotel

by WorldTravelMan

The hotel is in a great location and the rooms are nice.... HOWEVER, I had an early flight and asked the front desk to call "FlyTaxi" to drive me to the airport. BUT when I woke up that morning, I was greeted and told that one of the employees would drive me to the airport as a courtesy and "better than a taxi".... AND when we arrived at the airport, the driver demanded nearly 1.000.000,00 lei for the taxi ride (one way) to the airport... the cost of FlyTaxi was 1/3 that amount.AVOID this RIP OFF

Don't do this!!

by Mique

I saw this on teh mountain in Sinaia. People having their picture taken with a baby tiger. Mama tiger was held on a short leashe. And i think she was drugged in some way or maybe she lost all interest in everything. The fact that people still have their picture taken with these kind of animals make it interesting for the ' photographer' to keep having animals that are not ment for domestication. The only way to stop this is by all tourists to ignore people who offer these kind of activities. Unfortunately there are still too many people who think it is interesting to have a picture like that at home.

Driving in Romania

by faq

One of the few things to say about being problematic in Romania is: traffic. While noticing that Romania is making an effort to enhance their road network, the roads, mainly the secondary roads and in small villages, have poor quality. In some places you, while driving, have to pay attention to avoid the holes.Another thing to be careful is the horse carts that you will find on the road. During the day, you can suddenly face a slow horse cart in front of you and and at the night, those horse carts doesn't have any light on it.Yet another thing to care about is the romanian way of driving. pay attention to some more crazy guys driving there.

Missing history

by Villageidiot

Most Romanians learned very little of what happened in their countrybetween 1850-1950, as the knowledge was suppressed. Rumor and governmentpublications were the only sources of info. Even after the revolution muchremains poorly known. New textbooks are only gradually being developed. Many schools cannot afford them anyway. Many teachers were not originally taught accurate history. Legends and rumors compete with the real information. Romanians and Hungarians have different perspectives on events, andbelieve different sets of wrong information. Thus, giving up prizedlegends is often tied up with questions of identity and who was at fault. Women, Jews, and Gypsies are barely mentioned in any general source, though the universities and specialized sources are beginning to make upthat lack.Nonetheless, things are improving as the free exchange of informationincreases. The traveler is wise to...

Be carefull when driving

by Mique

This is a general tip and it doesn't hold true for all roads in Romania but if you're not used to drive in Romania take this advice at heart. If possible don't drive after dark. On many roads you can (and probably will) encounter horse-drawn carriages. Usually they have no lights. And yes, they're also on the road after dark. Then there are people walking on or just off the road. Not all of those are in sober state. Not to mention dogs, cows, goats and geese using the road to get home or to nice pastures. And if that isn't enough i took a picture of the road from Oradea to Cetariu to give you an example of what a smaller road can look like. And trust me, this isn't the worst part of the road, it was the easiest place to take a picture. This is not ment to prevent you from driving here. After all, i do so myself as well. Just to put you on your guard

The Worst Train Station in the World

by tylercdurden2004

Gara du Nord train station in Bucharesti is definitely the worst train station I have ever seen. Its full of people trying to either scam you or steal your *&#$! I loved my time in Romania but I did not love the few hours I spent at this place. When I first arrived I had one guy follow me for 10 minutes telling me he would take me to a hostel (rob me blind), he didnt take no for an answer. Tehn outside I had everone swarming me and looking at me I felt a tad uncomfotable. Even more uncomfortable teh time the lights went out on a train full of drunken gypsies in the country side. The gypsies get a real bad name but I didnt have any proplems infact they were quite helpful at times, like giving me a lift on their horse drawn buggy!Below is an acticle outlining the plight of some of Romanias Children and gives you an idea of Gara du Nord.

Toilet warning!

by Mique

Not sure if this should be under warnings or local customs but anyway it is the information that counts. In Romania it is quite normal that toilets don't have a lock. So unless the door is actually open and it is quite clear there is no one occupying the toilet, don't burst in! Knock! It doesn't really matter whether it is a small village restaurant or a very trendy bar in the city. You find these kind of toilets all over the place. Really had to get used to it. And even now, after a few months i sometimes forget. Luckily so far i haven't run into any embarrasing situations..
