Border Crossing

by Gary2920

If crossing into Romania @ border via car, the gaurds may try to "inflate" the road tax due. December 2004 it was approximately $10 US, but the gaurd told me it was 50 euro. Politley remind them you think they are incorrect. Since I had no Romanian money on me, they finally directed me to an exchange booth where I was able to exchange my money and pay the correct amount. It happened entering and leaving the country. Good luck!

A dangerous country???

by almogaver

Before starting my travel many people, including manyfriends and some family, spend many time talking to meabout my 'crazy plans' and trying to persuade to change my destiny.....Today, after spending one of my best travels, I remember all this days and I´m stillasking to me why people talk about something or someone without no experience!!. Well, perhaps we´ve been fortunated with people we metduring the travel, but....In another way, yes!...there are something you must know about Romania. Not all is perfect. The roads arethe worst I could never drive in all my life. Be sure you have a good car and drive very, very carefully. Better don´t drive at nigth.About toilettes...well, be prepared. Better don´t wait to found the same that home.

changing money

by madamebooboo

There are many black markets for changing money. Not a good idea! Have met many people who lost everything and sometimes nearly their lifes. The romanian banks can be a headache but the guys with money filled plastic bags are very dangerous.

Driving in Romania

by melissa_bel

When in Romania, don't forget to fill up your tank regularly. Maybe the situation has changed, but sometimes stations are out of gas and you might not find one that has gas in the whole department. Usually, they keep some stocks for the farmers. If you really need it, tell the attendant you'll pay an extra fee (gas is cheap there) and they'll help you.If driving at night in the countryside, be carefull. Horse-drawn carriages are not uncommon and hard to see, even if the driver has a little lamp. While driving in Bucharest, pay attention. It's quite chaotic! You'll find cars stopped in the middle of road with their passengesr repairing it on the spot. trolley-bus crossing, stray dogs walking on the road and the occasional horse carriage.

Sanitary Facilities

by SanguiniA

You will probably be shocked at the sanitary features of public toilets, if you manage to find any ... They really stink and are sometimes simply holes in the floor full of s**t and *** - yes even the women's toilets are that way!! Try to take care to take care of nature's needs before you get out of the hotel, if not you'll probably regret it (unless you are a man, things are easier for you that way... yeah yeah one point in favour of men!)

Stray Dogs

by SanguiniA

If you are scared of dogs, Romania is not a real good place for a holiday. There are thousands of stray dogs and there is a risk of rabies as well. I like dogs and none of them gave me any trouble whatsoever, they looked really amiable. Amazingly they all looked in good health and well fed. It seems that all Romanians really like dogs and feed them if they have the means to do so.

Poverty ... and its consequences

by SanguiniA

At first one may be shocked at the first experience in Bucharest, with all the beggars, pickpockets and the multitude of other people just figuring out ways to rip you off. But if you are careful enough there is a high probability that you will finish your holiday unscathed and with all your possession intact. Here are a couple of tips though:Never get in a 'taxi' that doesn't have a taxi sign. These people will certainly try to rip you off by asking for a much higher price than agreed upon once you arrive to the destination. It almost happened to me, a fake taxi driver offered to take me to a particular place for $5. 10 minutes into the journey he demanded $30 for fuel and $45 for the jouney!! I told him to take me right back and agreed to pay $10 to get myself out of trouble! And this was my first hour in Bucharest ...Beware of people in trains who pretend to be reading a newspaper...

Watch out of the Police!!

by edvin_br

The Romanian policmens dosnt known as kind once. Most of the times they dont do to you nothing but sometimes they can give you fines about foolish little thing you done and some of them even expect that you will bribe them and then they will forget of the fine...You should watch out when you are driving... in the city you must not drive over 50 km/h... i remember that in the summer we drove with 60 and got 300000 fine (10 dollars)... out of the city you must not drive in more then 80, and in european rods you can drive with maximum 90... if you see the drivers from the lane that facing you flashing it means that the police is not far so you better low your speed... in the motorways, that are not so common you can drive up to 120 i think...You shouldnt be afraid too much and you can take some chances because there are some road parts where there is no police... some of the roafds are bad...

Watch your computers

by jhawk1000

We lost our laptop in Ploesti when a taxi driver took off with it in the car. The driver had motioned that he would get it, we spoke little Romanian and when we got out, the driver left with us at the train station with our train on the track. Laptop was not found even though the taxi company was contacted by Romanian friends.

Pickpocketing

by 508

Be very careful, especially around train stations. Pickpockets work in groups and seem to close in on people as they get on a bus. Don't let this stop you from seeing the beautiful architecture of Bucharest, though. Just keep an eye out.
