Brasov's train station

by dkoishi

Romania proved to be very safe place to travel (maybe because I come from Brazil), and despite of the Bucharest's reputation we didn't have any problem at all, even walking late of night in the streets - just some dogs seems not to like much tourists. But I suggest to avoid arrive late at Brasov's train station. It's dark, and the place you need to wait for the bus it's full of strange people walking around. Many people approached us to ask for money, offering rooms or other services and although nothing happened all situation was a bit stressing.During the day it was quite ok, with some policemen around. At night, when I arrived (around midnight) I didn't see any at all.

by vichortonsza

We reached Bucharest late evening in the torrential rain and headed to the run down hotels opposite the train station. The arrival was not without incident, within minutes of leaving the train we were approached by several people telling us we had to stay in their hotels due to some regulation or other, asking us for foreign money to add to their collection and people warning us about the people who had already approached us! So just be prepared for any story. We didn't enconuter any hassels outside of the city.

by Lamanai

Be aware of dogs. There are many of them and they are not shy, believe me. But there are a few things which help. The simpliest way is to throw a stone, but as they get used to it it stops to work. Probably the best way is to use little petards. This should really work.

by waynebrian

Brasov - Internet cafes and sidewalk cafes are a haven for organised groups of thieves. We had a rucksack stolen at the internet cafe on the main square despite being warned. And we're fairly savvy travellers...never let your rucksack leave your touch. Wrap the strap around your chair, sit on it, but keep it safe. This is no reason not to go to Romania...just grab your stuff if approached by two or three people.

Changed phonenumbers in Romania

by ATLC

On the VT forum I read this: from http://www.matav.hu/english/ The full press release: AREA CODE CHANGES IN ROMANIA According to the information of the Romanian telecommunications company the area codes of the Romanian fixed-line network will change on June 14, 2002. Following this date a 2 has to be added before old area codes (e.g. the area code of Bucharest was 1 whereas the new code is 21, the area code of Arad was 57 whereas the new code is 257). In addition to area codes, the service access numbers of mobile service providers will also change as follows: Mobile service provider Old ............New Orange Romania .........+40 90/94/95 ...+40 74 MobiFon ................+40 91/92/93 ...+40 72 CosmoRom ...............+40 96 .........+40 76 TeleMobil ..............+40 98 ........+40 78 The country code 40 for Romania will not change.

Watch out for your valuables...

by 80_days

Watch out for your valuables and if you come by car, watch out even for your car. Don't leave anything that can be seen from the outside in it when you park it. There is some heavy steeling going on, but if you watch out, you won't have problems.

Do NOT EVEN ATTEMPT to smoke any marajuana if you are used to good weed. It is very, very, very bad there and they charge a ton and the authorities take their drug busts very seriously. I CANNOT STRESS ENOUGH what a waste of time it is to smoke pot. It will ruin your day alot. Or, uh, so I've heard...

by tiganeasca

One of the more popular scams, at least in Bucharest, seems to be the two men (they always operate as a pair and it's always men) who approach you, produce 'identification' (that you can't read unless you read Romanian) and claim to be the 'tourist police.' They usually ask for your passport and usually speak reasonable English--although I have also been approached in French and German. Ignore them or simply look them square in the eye, say 'no' loud and clear, and walk away. It has worked for me every time. If you aren't sure, offer to accompany them to the nearest police station. I keep hoping they will be ashamed of themselves and stop, but I guess there are too many tourists who just don't know...

by gnowk

Unfortunately, I lack a few special pictures of Bran and Rasnov Castles as a result of having my camera stolen. Be very careful of your belongings, especially in the more touristy areas!!! I cannot emphasize this more, as little is done to alleviate crimes committed against tourists.Oh. And you may also want to avoid taking international trains in Romania, unless you have a strong will. The train conductors often try to charge 'luggage fees' and customs officials often try to extort from unwary passengers. I was apparently close to being thrown off the train in Romania because I didn't have any extra dollars (US) for the customs official. If they will not provide you with a receipt, do not give them any money!!
