Tourist Visa

by lifeisatrip

To visit Russia, one has to have a tourist visa. http://www.visatorussia.com/russianvisa.nsf/index.htmlYour hotel can provide you with an invitation letter (visa support paper) which you will have to submit to a Russian visa processing center/embassy/consulate along with two applications and one passport photo. The visa support paper that comes from your hotel, you'll have to apply for. Our hotel requires copy of my credit card (both sides) and the dates we will be in country. I am kind of leery about giving them a copy of my credit card as my signature will show. But my other option is through the above website and that will cost $30.00; payment is through a secure website. The website has links to visa processing centers in different countries. And yes, this takes time. You'll have to have it even before you embark on your travel, otherwise, you will not be allowed entry into Russia.

Russia

by inca99

Russia many believe is not safe and welcoming place.Where by my experience is different. You are always welcome in Russia if you can smile, have patience and some street smartness to understand behaviour. You must be an elite or russian,if you can read any single notices on street but its more or less same in Europe.I have heared abt more than 10 pronounces of Champs Ellesys(bear with spelling) and Erron Polytechnieu.Finding hotel in Russia is not difficult if you have contacted travel agent before hand otherwise finding one will be miracle. And most hotels are like pensions and costs more than double in Moscow.Down south near black sea, some really nice places one must visit.Like Novorossisk,Krasnodar,Anapa, etc.But only if really interested in Russia and how things were in former CCCP.

The Architecture!! Awesome! of the subway, the buildings...everything. Lo que más me gustó fue el arte que hay, lo increíble de todas las arquitecturas, edificios, museos, el hermitage! y a esto se une la preservación de los rusos hacia todo esto. Todo está bien cuidado

VISAS - The law has changed

by BlueMenagerie

I've just got back from Russia (October 2007), and although I thought I knew all the visa laws with regards to getting one and registering it after 3 days, when I asked at the hotel, they said the law has now changed and that Visa registrations are no longer necessary.

Money exchange

by salisbury3933

Money exchange outlets are all over the place in Russia, and most hotels offer this service as well.$US and Euros are most easily changable, but there are some bureaus in St Pete and Moscow that will change a huge range of currencies.

A country of amazing diversity.

by morgenhund

I would direct people to Red Square - a trip to Russia (or Moscow specifically) is not complete without going there. The first time you see the Kremlin, St Basil's etc. in Moscow - or one of the Vytsoki (Stalin's Seven Sisters) is something you will never forget - especially not if you see them as the sun is setting.

The Russia Experience

by SurfaceTravel

(Ignore the headings.) We used The Russia Experience in 2004/5 to help arrange an overland trip we did from London to Hanoi, via Moscow, Vladivostok, Harbin, and Beijing. Details in VT, more details at Surface Travel, Phase II.This travel company is based in London and can only handle visas for residents of the UK.Over-all, they were good and we would recommend them to others. They took care of most of my visas, answered our many questions and handled our many alterations to the itinerary before the trip, and all services and bookings were delivered as promised. All hotels were expecting us, all train tickets were delivered, and all agents we there to greet us when expected. At any given time, we only had train tickets for the next immediate leg of the journey. We would pick up the next tickets either from their local agents or directly from the hotel. Our first contact with an agent was...

Onion dome

by kris-t

An onion dome is a type of architectural dome that frequently adorns Russian Orthodox Churches. These bulbous structures taper smoothly to a point, and strongly resemble the vegetable after which they are named. The domes are often brightly painted; the colours symbolise different aspects of religion. Green, blue, and gold domes represent the Holy Trinity, the Spirit of God, and Jesus, respectively. Green domes (representing submission) appear on monasteries. The inner surface of the onion domes are often vividly painted with frescoes and murals.Onion domes often appear in groups of three or five, representing the Holy Trinity or Jesus and the Four Evangelists, respectively. Domes standing alone represent Jesus. The domes reflect the influence of earlier Byzantine architecture, evolving from the broader, flatter domes of the helmet-like style to a form particularly suitable for northern...

Dual Pricing

by JohnniOmani

Although dual pricing is not as bad as in the past it is still noticable in Russia. Foreigners always pay double the Russian rate. Hotels and museums always have a higher rate. It is often fair game for taxi drivers and in the markets and bargaining and prices depend on your Russian skills. Museums charge about 10 times the price of a local so expect to pay a lot ot enter and take photos.
