Weather in Moscow and St Petes

by JohnniOmani

The two main cities are warm from about mid may to early september, summer days in these cities are long- so long that at midsummer in St Petersburg theres no real darkness so you can people watch and chill out at cafes until 2 or 3am. Winter sees both cities frozen by December and only seeing about 5 hours of sunlight. Temperatures in the summer is about 25 degrees in Moscow and 22 in St Petes.

The people you meet

by salisbury3933

One of the great things about the long train trips is that it gives you the chance to get to know the locals. Here are two guys that we shared a four person compartment with. Russians tend to want to chat on the long train trips, and thankfully I had kept up my Russian studies since university. Great fun, and Russians tend to be very open people, so you get to learn a lot about your travelling companions.

Visa registration

by bijo69

Ok, this is certainly NOT my favourite thing about Russia. But it's good to remember:If in Russia you have to register your visa with the local authorities in three working days and that in every town you stay. In case you're staying in hotel it's usually done there. If you're staying at friends etc you'll have to go to the PVU/OVIR, meaning lots of paper work and waiting. Should you have obtained the visa through a travel agency they should have a partner in Russia who will do this for you, charging about 30US$.The registration now will be stamped on your immigration card. DON'T LOOSE IT!!!

Backpack with Beetroot Bus

by grishaV1

Russia is not an expensive place to travel outside of the cities much. Backpacking is even cheaper to do also with hitchhiking in summer seasons. One company is Beetroot Bus which is alright I have heard. They have regular tours for the summer, look at their website to find the dates for leaving: BACKPACKING WITH BEETROOT: The website is really self explanatory I think even for someone who has never traveled in Russia and only dim idea about how to obtain a visa, etc. Check it out if backpacking is your style. I know a lot of people don´t like the "tour group" method but for first-timers who don´t know anyone in Russia or if going with a few friends, its a good idea to find a company that is somewhat internationally known. Also they have facts about how to get to Russia, about these new visa system, and some true information. You can download their brochure too for all dates. Some of the...

More than just Moscow and St Petes

by grishaV1

I prefer the places outside larger cities best--better than being in them, even though Moscow and St. Petersburg are main destination spots. Both have their attractions, St. Petersburg with many beautiful buildings and parks. Moscow has absolutely everything you could possibly want :-)Its the largest country in Europe and has the most people, and has many different ethnic groups and climates. Although I feel most people just think of Moscow when they think Russia, or a cold Siberian landscape but there's much, much more. I've visited Moscow and St. Petersburg, Yukhnov, Magadan, Vladivostok and Navominsk, and the places in between in getting to those cities. I visited first when I was a little boy with my parents, and when Ukraine was just another area inside the Soviet Union. 20 years later I returned to the "new" Russia where people like the freedom but still struggle with what having...

Visa etc

by Anya_D

Most of you will need a visa to get into Russia. Some countries have special treaties with Russia which allow to visit Russia on a visa-free basis. To get a visa, you must apply to the Consulate Department of the Russian mission in you country. To get a visa, you need to submit at least the following documents:invitation from anyone in Russia;filled in questionnaire;three photos 4x5 cm;passport. It usually takes at least 5 days to get a single entry visa and at least 14 days for a multiple one. After you arrive in Russia, you must get registered according to the 'Rules for foreign citizens'stay in Russia' (a very boring but useful document). In the plane you will be given an immigration card, which you will have to keep until exit. You get registered within 3 days after you arrive (not counting holidays and weekends), otherwise you will get in trouble. The hotels usually do the...

Fête au profit des enfants de Beslan

by Klod5
