Preconception: Apprehension

by Sharrie

It was a "rushed" trip, not properly planned. In essence, last minute. I didn't confirmed on going until a week before departure. Planned? Yes. I knew I'd go this year because it's St. Petersburg 300th Anniversary.Stevie & Ann went. But me? I had no idea until I went to the tour agency & booked a trip. & even then, it was not confirmed as my visa might not be issued on time! Speaking of visa from Russia, gosh, it's a hassle. One needs sponsorship letters from each hotel he/she intended to stay in. & upon arrival, more stampings... more of that later. In the mean time, Russia was a stranger. To me, it's a communist country. Yet, very unlike the communism in China. That was what was on my mind. Will I be safe? What's in store?Excited? Yes! I had been wanting to see it for ages!Yet, there's some degree of apprehension...Some comfort was that I'll be on a group tour.Yet, the tour leader himself was...

The red wall surrounding the red square is gorgeous and I can not explain to you the sentiments of happiness of being in the red square, it is mixed of respect of great gorgeous special place know as the centre of a supreme county U.S.S.RFor me Russia is still keeping this status till know, and I can not be biased as I really adore Russia.

Clock

by dr.firas

This is the biggest Clock in Russia, and the most famous too, every hour it will give you the great bells sound of the quality of the present hour, best thing to hear at midnight, as it is not just primitive one tone bell, it is before the stereotype you will hear music of the different bells.

MOSCOW : INTERNET CABINS

by swesn

Internet cabins appear to be a little bit more difficult to find because Moscow is SO HUGE!Go to the Okhotny Ryad Shopping Mall. There is one very big internet provider located at the basement next to the food court. Turn right when you reach the bottom of the escalator. It is open 24 hours, I believe. If you go early, like before 9am and stay late, like after 9pm (I cannot really recall the exact time), the price per hour is MUCH CHEAPER.The mall may be closed at those hours. There are some guards standing at the entrance. Just do the 'keyboard-typing' motion and mouth 'INTERNET' and they let you in.Another internet cabin is found along Novy Arbat ul. Walk towards west, after a huge shopping mall on the left side of Novy Arbat ul, watch out for the INTERNET sign. But this is a little bit more expensive than the one at Okhotny Ryad Mall.

ST PETERSBURG : INTERNET CABINS

by swesn

Internet cabins are readily found in St. Petersburg. There are many along Nevsky Prospekt, of course. A good one is found on the left side of Nevsky Prospekt if you walk from Pl Vosstania metro station towards Nevsky Prosp metro station. I cannot quite remember exactly but I believe it is located before you reach Fontanka Canal.

READ BOOKS BY RUSSIAN WRITERS

by swesn

When in Russia, getting into the Russian mood and culture by reading Russian literature. Alexander Pushkin, Nikolai Gogol, Leo Tolstoy, Ivan Turgenev, Fyodor Dostoevsky...I read 'Crime and Punishment' by Fyodor Dostoevsky after visiting St. Petersburg and it was really great to read the description in the book writing about the streets and bridges I had probably walked by myself.

Russia at Night

by Pablos_new

Russsia is the largest country of the world with "only" 145 mln. habitants. On this collage of night space photos one can see where "life" is in Russia. First, Major cities - Moscow (~10 mln), St. Peter (~5 mln), then big industrial region from Tatarstan on Volga to Ural Mountains, South of Russia from Rostov-on-Don to Caucasus and thin thread of the Trans-Siberian Railway towards far-east port - Vladivostok.
