On both my trips to Moscow I left the city by plane from Domodedovo to Düsseldorf inGermany. In 2005 I flew with Germania Express, whereas in 2009 I used Air Berlin.
Domodedovo International Airport is one of the largest airports in Russia. It is located about 40 km southeast of Moscow's city centre and can conveniently be reached by public transport.
For more info on how to get to the airport please read my "To Domodedovo by public transport" tip.

Te most popular question in a forum: How to get from Sheremet'evo (SVO) to the Center.
It is far from the center, but there is a shuttle train to Savelovskaya (Gray line) and Belorusskaya (Green and Circle lines) metro stations.
Aeroexpress: http://www.aeroexpress.ru/en/
Metro: http://mosmetro.ru/flash/scheme01.html
It is almost impossible to use metroo if you do not know Cyrillic alphabeth. Russian language is not so importain (someone could help you with advise in English in Moscow), but Cyrillic letters are the must! All signs and names of the stations are in Russian.
To get to the Red Square w/o changing lines you need to reach "Biblioteka imeni Lenina" "Библиотека имени Ленина" (Gray line) or "Okhotnyi Ryad" "Охотный Ряд" (Green line).

Sheremetyevo is violently expanding, with 4 terminals to add within a year. More chaos to be expected - my plain from Nice due to Terminal 2 landed in Terminal C last September. The building as such is new am modern, but the ways and habits are old – no one knows anything, and those who do never care to notify those who don’t.
I’ll be back with more news, I hope; so far you can check the airport’s own site:

From Domodedovo airport to Moscow by Expressbus (nr. 308) to Domodedovo metro station, pay 80 Rubel in the bus.
Domodedovskaya metro station: get off the last carriage of the train (if you go from the city centre), turn right in the pedestrian subway. The bus stop is close to the subway exit,
Bus service: from 6.00 to 24.00
Mini busses go the same way for 100 Rubel also in the night,
or Expresstrain to Paveletsky station (if you have luggage the better solution, it is difficult to use the metro with luggage), 250 Rubel,
or lokal train to Paveletsky station.
Leaving the country, don´t buy your cigarets at the Airport dutyfree shop, much cheaper outide the dutyfree area.

I know SVO2 takes a bad rap and deservedly so, but in the 2 years since I used it, the place has changed for the better. More signs in English and the PA announcements are in English too and it just seems more clean and friendly. Even the taxi driver was helpful giving directions! A brand new building is under construction next door, so I don't if it is a new addition or maybe a new SVO2 altogether. Cons - The air still sucks because the smoking sections are scattered all over; which is basically a Cigarette advertisement and an ashtray. There is nothing ‘free’ in the Duty Free section, so save your money for the next destination.

I really liked Domodedovo airport which is extremely modern and efficient and with various shops to visit, and enough spaces to sit while you are waiting to catch your flight.
I took the aeroexpress train from Paveletsky station to get there, and it took about 40 minutes.
Various busses and shuttles are also going there.

As of 10 July 2009, if you are leaving Russia with Moscow as a transit point, you cannot check your luggage to your final destination, only to Moscow. There you collect your luggage and arrange yourself the transit from the arrival airport to the departure airport where you pass security check, customs, and boundary. If you arrive to Sheremetyevo 1 and leave from Sheremetyevo 2, there is an airport shuttle every 30 minutes, but since now nobody takes care of the transit passengers, you may have to struggle to get into it with about 100 people, all of them complaining that they are missing their connecting flights. There are lots of taxis but the prices are crazy. Your option is to catch a regular bus (No 851, 851C, 817 - price 25 Roubles) or a minibus (No 48, 49M, 200M - price 60 Roubles). They are more frequent, every 5 or 10 minutes one of them leaves, but still you should take into account the traffic jams, so be sure to have at least 3 hours transit time.

Aeroflot is wellknown for it's cuisine. Long distance travelers will get chicken, chicken and chicken to eat. Passengers on the longest routes will even get one or two extra chicken meals. I had the pleasure to fly an Ilyushin Il-86 from Moscow to Lima, Peru with stops in Luxenburg, Halifax and Cuba. A wide body aircraft with too short range. But Aeroflot doesn't deserve the bad reputation. The pilots are skillful and the air hostess are good looking and used to deal with drunk and rude Russian businessmen.

Sheremetyevo-2 is still Moscow's major international airport and is served by Aeroflot and a couple of international airlines. Domestic flights leave from terminal one, which is connected by a shuttle service with terminal 2.
It doesn't belong to the nicest airports I've ever seen, with few bathrooms (never very clean) and few sitting possibilities.
The airport is about 30km North of the city centre and can by reached by bus (No.851) for 25 RUB or minibus for 40 RUB from the metro station Rechnoy Voksal. A taxi certainly won't cost less than 1000 RUB.
If you're flying into Moscow check to which airport your flight goes as there are 2 other international ones: Domodedovo and Vnukovo

I flew from Brussels to Moscow Domodedovo airport. The arrival and the handling of the luggages were fast. Even crossing the border didnt last a long time. The airport is modern but rather boring with few things to do while waiting for your flight.
Excellent quality of the service on board SN Brussels Airlines flight.
The airport is well located in the middle of nowhere. consider at leats 45 min to reach downtown Moscow.
Demodedovo is well the new airport and there are no delays in the flights which is not the case at the other major airport Sheremeteyevo
