Packing list essentials
Clothing/Shoes/Weather Gear: Women should pack a scarf to cover their heads when entering any religious buildings. While this is not mandatory in most places, it is important to respect other cultures when travelling.
Comfortable shoes are always a good idea when site-seeing…we always seem to walk for hours, and wouldn’t want a trip ruined by sore feet or blisters!
Toiletries and Medical Supplies: There didn’t appear to be a shortage of chemists or shops selling the basics, but there was the language issue to deal with….so I would recommend bringing everything you may need with you. Plus, nothing is cheap in Moscow.
Photo Equipment: Moscow is filled with amazing photo opportunities….so make sure you pack more films/cards/batteries than you think you will need….nothing worse than flat batteries at the wrong moment. Alex also packed his tripod, which is particularly good for those night shots in Red Square….just watch out for the Kremlin guards (refer to my Warnings & Dangers tip for details)!
Miscellaneous: Ensure you pack a good Russian to English (or whatever your language) phrase book, which shows not only translations, but also the words in cyrillic letters. It can be slow going working out what things say in Russian…and helps if your husband is half Russian and can already read some of it ; )Related to:

Miscellaneous: Whatever it is you need for your stay in Moscow, you'd be better off buying it before you arrive. Moscow is very expensive nowadays. The famous 'GUM' department store located on Red Square (in photo) is beautiful but very expensive.
Pack a cemera
Miscellaneous: Every one of the metrostations looks(+/-) as good as this one below....KIEVSKAYA STATION...you could spend a week potographing the stations...theyre THAT good.
On a rainy day?...just do an Underground Metro Tour..get off...pop into the station..take a pic...and head to another station...its like an inexpensive mobile tour of 300 different art museums.
Photo Equipment: All my Moscow pictures are taken with a 1999 Rollei Prego 90 35mm compact & Fuji Reala 100 film.
Miscellaneous: It was hot (30+C/86+F) & sunny when I visited Moscow in July, 1999.
Of course Moscow in winter (like Canada & the northern & northeastern USA) continues to debunk the idea of global warming & still has 'proper' winters.
See the webcam link for current weather details & to see how Moscow looks right now.
Miscellaneous: If you are going to visit Moscow in spring, summer and especially in autumn take the umbrella!!! Because it's raining often.
Luggage and bags: Go outside of the Kremlin and Red Square, full of people, visit Kitai-gorod, and you'll find a lot of surprises.
I stayed in the Moscow Metropol for two weeks in Sept. 2008. Bad: The Internet access is terrible....more
