Place of Skulls by sue_stone Located just up the hill from St Basil’s Cathedral, the Place of Skulls (or Lobnoye Mesto) is the spot where public executions used to be carried out. To be honest it is not much to look at – as per the photo, it is a round, walled platform in Red Square, probably appreciated more these days as somewhere for tourists to take the weight off between sites. Wall of Peace by sue_stone Not far along Ulista Arbat, partially hiding under some trees is the Wall of Peace. This is a wall made from hundreds of individually painted tiles, all with a theme of friendship and unity across the world. I wouldn’t go out of my way to see it….but if you find yourself wandering down Ulista Arbat, check it out. Leave a Comment

Lenin's Mausoleum by sue_stone One of the highlights of our time in Moscow would have to have been Lenin's Mausoleum. The Mausoleum is an unusual granite construction located just by the Kremlin, in Red Square. Free to visit, it is open 4 mornings a week from 10am-1pm (closed Mon & Fri). No cameras or bags are allowed and you will need to leave them at the Kremlin left luggage office before you line up for the Mausoleum, or at your hotel as we did (as it was just down the road). There was quite a queue when we arrived at around 9.45am, but we took the advice of a VT friend (who had visited Moscow a couple of weeks earlier) and we jumped the queue a little…. as did most other people who turned up after us!! After 30mins or so we were let into Red Square (which is roped off on the mornings that the Mausoleum is open) and went to check out Lenin. You enter the dimly lit and well guarded tomb, walk silently down some stairs and join a line that snakes right around a glass covered coffin, with Lenin lying there…he looks so alive you expect him to open his eyes and wink at you. There is no time to stare though….the guards keep the line moving and before you know if you are back outside, where you can check out some of the graves along the Kremlin wall – Stalin is there, along with other communist big shots. Bizarre. Leave a Comment

Bolshoi Theatre by sue_stone One of the most famous theatres in the world is located in Moscow – the beautiful Bolshoi Theatre. It is here that ‘Swan Lake’ was preformed for the first time, and the theatre is these days renowned for its world-class ballet and opera performances. Unfortunately when we were in Moscow there was no performances which was quite disappointing – would love to hear from anyone who has been and enjoyed the experience. shoppers in Ulista Arbat by sue_stone Ulista Arbat is a pedestrian street that is more than a kilometre long. It is lined with clothing stores, restaurants, bars & cafes and of course souvenir shops. There are also plenty of street entertainers and artists, along with pickpockets and the occasional dodgy looking person. A great place for an afternoon stroll and a spot of window shopping. Kazan Cathedral is located just outside Resurrection Gate, close to Red Square. It is actually a replica of the original – this one was built in 1993…the 1636 original was demolished as it got in the road of parades… It is free to enter – and definitely worth a look, as it is a pretty little place. Even better though, is to stop by throughout the day when the church bells chime…as there is still a man who manually rings the bells, and you can see him banging away – hope he has his ear plugs in!! Resurrection gate is situated at the northern entrance to Red Square, located next to the State Historical Museum. The gate you see today was actually built in 1995, as the original one that was built in 1680 was demolished on Stalin’s orders in 1931, as it got in the way…tanks couldn’t get into Red Square…. There is a small chapel built as part of the gate, and just outside the gate is ‘Kilometre Zero’, from where all distances in Moscow are measured. There were people standing on the marker, throwing coins in the air….not sure if they were making a wish or playing two-up ; ) Leave a Comment

The Gosudarstvenny Universalny Magazin (State Department Store), or GUM as it is more conveniently known, is located on the northeastern side of Red Square. It is certainly not your average department store….it is much more beautiful! Three stories high, the centre has a glass roof that really makes this place special, along with a central fountain. There are several cafes and plenty of up-markets shops to browse in, along with more affordable options. It is not just a place to shop, but also a magnificent building…and what a location - right on Red Square. Leave a Comment

St Basil's Cathedral is one of the strangest looking buildings I have ever seen! This crazy looking cathedral was built between 1555 & 1561 at the edge of Red Square, commissioned by Ivan the Terrible. The outside is surely the most photographed in Moscow - the colourful and varied domes certainly catch your eye, and make a particularly fabulous photo subject at night when they are flood lit. I found the inside slightly less interesting, though definitely worth a look. It is made up of 9 small chapels, with narrow corridors joining them. (Perhaps I was just expecting one large chapel, like most churches/cathedrals have). Whatever you think of it, you certainly won't have any trouble finding it! Open: Wednesday - Monday 11am - 5.30pm, closed Tuesday Leave a Comment

The State Historical Museum is another magnificent building located at the northern end of Red Square. Here you can learn about the entire history of Russia, from the Stone Age onwards. Although we didn't actually enter the museum, the outside was spectacular enough - huge and red, it featured in many of my favourite photos from Moscow. Closed on Tuesdays and the first Monday of the month.
