Traditions and Habits: Matryoshkas
  • Tip Rating:
  • Matryoshkas are nesting dolls and a typical souvenir from Russia. This toy first appeared in Russia at the end of the 19th century. The name "Matryoshka" comes from Matryona, which was a very popular female name among peasants in old Russia. The name is related to the Latin word for "Mother." Thus, the name is connected with motherhood.

Near the ironclad Aurora are numerous seller offering calendars, souvenirs and of course Matryoshkas. Do not forget to bargain!

Blini Festival week is the week before Lent, seven weeks before Easter.
In ancient times it was the festival to say goodbye to Winter and hello to the sun.
The round blini pancake represents the sun.
The last Sunday of the festival is forgiveness day where all is forgiven and redeemed.
And the Lady Maslenitsa effigy is burned to say goodbye to Winter.

In southern europe it is the time of carnival, in Catholic traditions it is Shrovetide.

Just be sure and eat lots of warm tasty blini!

Traditions and Habits: Brides are everywhere
  • Tip Rating:
  • Brides are everywhere in St. Petersburg...having their pictures made on canal bridges, at war monuments, and at the Bronze Horseman, where it's traditional for newlyweds to smash a champagne glass at the statue's base. Step carefully because you'll find lots of shattered glass around the foot of the monument.

    Traditions and Habits: Wedding
  • Tip Rating:
  • We saw this wedding when we were lunching at the Rostral Columns. The couple sat down in front of the triton figure for a wedding photo. Then they went to a nearby park where the couple had to pose for the relatives taking photos. The poor bride - it was raining and the beautiful white dress turned grey after a while, got soaked and heavy.

Traditions and Habits: Young Russian Women – "Devushkas" – Who Are They?

Russian women are said to be 'the most beautiful women in the world'. Many of them have almond eyes. They are tall and thin with long legs on sometimes amazingly high heel shoes. Most of them are blond, and they have pink cheeks in Winter, they seem like they know what they're doing, they affirm themselves. They look pretty when they don't wear too much make-up.
In Russia, middle class families earn not much money. Some young people choose to study to be able to find a well paid job in the future. Most of young women and men , though, have parents which can't afford paying for their tuition fees. And only the best students get State grants. Therefore, the young people who want to study spend a couple of years, after High-School, working in order to economize enough money.
Young people often have short term contracts, especially young women. Indeed, employers try to avoid having to pay the obligatory '3 year-paid maternity leave for child care'.
Few young women live away from the family home and are financially independent.
They try to find a way out in finding a wealthy Russian or even foreign husband. Their parents have nothing against this.
Maybe this explains why young Russian women dress in a way which attracts men like bees.
Also, since the end of the Soviet times, the shops sell all sorts of fashion clothes and cheeky underwear, which couldn't be found before. Women seem to make up for all the years of rationed Soviet times in being frenzy of the most extravagant clothes.

Traditions and Habits: Old Women in Russia – "Babushkas"
  • Tip Rating:
  • Babushkas dealers on street - Saint Petersburg
    Babushkas dealers on street

The old ladies are very noticeable in Russia, they're called 'Babushkas'.
You can't come to Russia without meeting them, as they seem to spend their days outside. They join together for a chat on the benches in front of their homes, or they walk their dog in the parks. Because they are in every public place, they contribute to making the cities feel safe, even in the evening.
They grew up during the hard times of the war and never miss a chance to remind people about that.
Most of them live still with their children and grandchildren, homes being expensive in big cities. They take care of their grandchildren, and sometimes work also for other families as nannies or home-help.
They get a very low State pension (1500 R =$50 US per month), so they often find small jobs, which will let them earn a bit more. Some Babushkas choose to do government jobs in public places, which let them earn something like twice more than if they were only on their pension. So you will see them keeping the metro, sitting in the museums, cleaning the railways..
And some Babushkas find other ways of making money.
-- For example, they wait for travelers arriving at railway stations in St Pete, and propose them to live at their apartment. Sometimes they are honest nice grannies who let you sleep in their cozy Soviet flat, sometimes they give you a false set of keys and when you get to the flat, it seems to be the wrong door, but the Babushka is already far away with your money..

    Traditions and Habits: Keep Right
  • Tip Rating:
  • Crosswalks in Saint Petersburg are separated. Arrows mark the side you should keep. I have never seen this before but I guess it is a good way to avoid a crash with another passerby during rush hours.
