Gogol was a crazy genius who wrote memorable stories (Nose, Overcoat, Dead Souls, Diary of a Madman etc.) based in provincial Russian or St.Petersburg. His novellas are filled with locations, shops, restaurants from actual life.
Anyhow, to see Gogol these days is to search out the two monuments to him in the city - one is of him in a military overcoat looking all very martial (see picture opposite); the other is of him in a more literary pose (see homepage).
I couldn't recall where they are now, but have fun looking for them (or check out the Time Out guide for help).

Considered one of the founders of Russian science, Mikhail Lomonosov (1711-65) was a true Renaissance man ~ passionate about education, he helped found the Moscow State University in 1755; he wrote a grammatical revision; he published the first history of Russia; he wrote poetry; and, finally, he "dabbled" in mosaics (learning the art himself and building a factory).
This monument is found on the University grounds (Lomonosov taught at the Academy of Sciences). There is also an interesting statue at the other end of the park row, although I'm not sure who/what it is, this one less traditional in design.

Krylov's fables featured animals, so the base of his monument is carved with scenes from his stories.
The carvings are not at all child-like and charming though, several bare teeth and claws. . .and there are even a couple of menacing scenes of violence.

Another notable feature of the Summer Gardens is this statue of Ivan Krylov ~ the "Russian Aesop." The statue was built in 1855 to honour the country's most famous and most beloved author of fables.
The gardens have long been the setting and inspiration for artists ~ Pushkin and Akhamatova have mentioned it in their poetry and Krylov apparently met other artists here for debates.
