Museums: Avrora
  • Tip Rating:
  • The Avrora (Aurora) is berthed on the Neva river and it is famous for having signalled the start of the 1917 revolution.

I got a good glimpse of this ship from a ferry trip I took around St Petersburg. I believe one can also go on the decks of the ship itself too.

    Monuments: Dostoevsky's grave
  • Tip Rating:
  • Hardcore literary fans should consider visiting Dostoevsky's grave in Tikhvin Cemetary at the Alexander Nevsky Monastery. He is surrounded by other great artists, including many famous composers such as Tchaikovsky.

For about 80 R you can buy a two-sided color map that points out, in English and Russian, where the graves of famous artists are located within the cemetery.

Downtown Sites: Now THIS is a bookstore!
  • Tip Rating:
  • Not so far off the beaten path, I guess, because it is located smack in the heart of the Nevsky Prospekt, is Dom Knigi--the House of Books. This multi-level bookstore is in the Singer Building, a turn-of-the-century factory for the Singer Sewing Machine Company! Its art-nouveau aspects (and especially its corner decoration) make it quite impressive. But go inside an feast your eyes and pocketbook on this wonderful bookstore. Art books, especially, tend to be of high quality and less expensive than in the West. There is even a small foreign-language section. You may be amazed, as I was, at the number of people in bookstores generally. Reading is a popular pastime in Russia and I never visited a bookstore that wasn't crowded.

The store is located at Nevsky Prospekt 28. It is open Monday through Saturday from 9 a.m. until 8 p.m. and on Sunday from 11 a.m. until 7 p.m.

    Habits and Ways: Gipsys dinner
  • Tip Rating:
  • What one may think hearing the word - gipsys?

Gipsys' camp, dark haired ladies in colored long skirts with a lot of clinging necklaces around their necks, men in red shirts playing the guitar, heard of horses nearby, a big fire....

It's none of the above, at least for me now... They are like all of us, they have the same problems and the same happy moments, they have their traditions and want to keep them, they have their language and pass it over to a younger generation, they are like we are, but maybe they like the live more and know better how to enjoy every moment it gives us...

    City Environs: Vyritsa
  • Tip Rating:
  • Vyritsa is a village about 20-30km from St. Pete, it is known to be one the best dacha places and it is indeed. One can witness a lot of old dacha buildings, some of which unfortunatwly were abandoned and fell into decay, but still keep the traces of the past beauty.

The village as well is known for the church of Lady of Kazan', which was built without a single nail (!!!). The church inside is of dark wood as well, which makes the whole atmosphere dim and sets the mind to think of eternity of existence....

    City Environs: The Saint
  • Tip Rating:
  • Vyritsa is a saint place in Russia, people from all directons come here to pay a tribute and to pray to the relics of Seraphym Vyritsky. Seraphim is the saint of our days, he died sometime in the 50s of the last century. He perform a lot of wonders and is known as well for prediction, that decpite the blockade of Leningrad and a lot of fights around, Vyritsa would remain untouched by the enemy forces.
People usually write notes and requests, wishes and aspirations on small pieces of paper and put them near or under the shrine of St. Seraphym.

    Museums: Mammoth Hunt
  • Tip Rating:
  • Also on display at the Saint Petersburg zoological museum is this modern artist's recreation or interpretation of a wooly mammoth hunt such as took place many thousands of years ago, when early humans drove the great beasts to extinction... I found this piece an interesting contrast to the ancient cave painting of a wooly mammoth, which was done from actual experience...

    Museums: Cave Painting
  • Tip Rating:
  • Another interesting exhibit of the Saint Petersburg zoological museum is this displayed reproduction of an ancient cave painting done by a primitive artist depicting a wooly mammoth... As recently as about 10,000 years ago, mammoths and humans co-existed until the mammoth, an easy food source, was driven to extinction...
