It is surprising how the first sun feels so warm as winter starts to relent its hold.
Locals gather along the Peter and Paul Fortress to gather the first warm rays as they bounce off the ice and wallls of the fortress. Each ray is savored as the joy of spring seems not so far away.

It was for its location at the mouth of the Neva River that Peter the Great fought so hard to obtain the site where St. Petersburg now stands. The port is truly a "gateway" through which billions of dollars worth of goods and raw materials pass from East to West and West to East each year. The port is enormous, so large in fact that if you arrive in St. Petersburg by ship you will see that the commercial port stretches as far as the human eye can see. It is truly a marvel.
