Miscellaneous: Don't forget to pack....

Women should pack a scarf to cover their heads when entering any religious buildings. While this is not mandatory in most places, it is important to respect other cultures when travelling.

Comfortable shoes are always a good idea when site-seeing....we always seem to walk for hours, and wouldn't want a trip ruined by sore feet or blisters!

There didn't appear to be a shortage of chemists or shops selling the basics, but there was the language issue to deal with....so I would recommend bringing everything you may need with you. Plus, nothing is cheap in Russia.

St Petersburg is filled with amazing photo opportunities...so make sure you pack more films/cards/batteries than you think you will need....nothing worse than flat batteries at the wrong moment. Alex also packed his tripod, which is particularly good for those night shots of things like the Church on Spilled Blood.

Ensure you pack a good Russian to English (or whatever your language) phrase book, which shows not only translations, but also the words in cyrillic letters. It can be slow going working out what things say in Russian...and helps if your husband is half Russian and can already read some of it

An excellent resource for information about travels to Eastern or Central Europe is "In Your Pocket". It provides information of more than 50 cities at the travel portal In Your Pocket . About 20 printed full city guides are available locally at various places. I got myself the St. Petersburg guide (150 Rubels, 2005) at the book shop "Anglia", which is located at Nab. Reky Fontanky 38.
In my opinion the guide provides all essential information an independent traveller needs to know.

    Miscellaneous: Copies of your documents
  • Tip Rating:
  • Make sure to have copies of all your important travel documents, like passport, visa and registration. Just in case the originals get stolen, the copies can be very helpful to get replacements from your embassy.
There are various opinions about what you should take with you during the day: the originals or the copies. In fact it is not an obligation to carry an ID in Russia, but on the other hand the police can stop you and ask for your documents. To be honest, I am not interested in ending up in a Russian police station.

...if you find yourself in Russia in the winter, for the love of all that is good and true, bring wool and flannel everything. Fleece, that's a good idea as well. Fur! My mink earmuffs and flannel-lined jeans, I think they saved my life! Don't forget the heavy wools, hats, socks, boots, and layered gloves and mittens.

If you plan on going to the theatre, opera, ballet, etc. at all while in St. Pete's, you should really bring along a classier outfit. Russians there will be dressed up, even more so if you go to one of the big theatres like the Mariinsky. Nice black pants and a dress shirt/blouse will do, just make sure you stay away from jeans and fanny packs - you'll feel out of place, trust me.

    Climate: weather and packing
  • Tip Rating:
  • Lets face it. Youre on the road and seasoned travellers know not to pack TOO heavily. That sweatsuit doubles as PJs, some T-shirts get worn alot and dress shoes may never get worn. I toted dress shoes for 2 months, wore them 4x and tossed them in the trash the last day because I didnt want to pack them. Shoulda left them home. Hey, youre on a travelling adventure, not a fashion show. If you have to pack an extra pair of shoes..make it comfortable sneakers.

You know youre with a travel novice if you hear complaints like you didnt bring PJs or that you arent doing laundry EVERY day.

SPB is one of the northernmost cities in Europe. I am from Florida and the summer was colder than my winter! It also rained at some point in the day 80% of the time I was there(in Finland it rained 18 days straight!) Most people arent from the tropics like I am but trust me...summers arent very warm. It got above 74 degrees 2x in 2 months. Mostly it was LOW 60s.

Pack meds and tioletries that you like and make you feel comfortable. SPB has many products Europe has but good luck reading the directions in cyrillic and good luck finding them.

All the pictures that were taken were somehow fogged and ruined at the photo store in SPB. hence...I have NO pics. next time I will wait untill I get home to develop them. What am I saying...next time I will use a digital camera LOL

You only need to spend 10 hours walking around in 60 degree rainy weather to WISH you had packed that umbrella($1 in USA) or poncho or extra sweatshirt.

Climate: Be ready for the weather
  • Tip Rating:
  • St. Petersburg is very far to the North and because of this it never gets really warm there, even in the summer. Our guide told us that they always have to be careful of frost even in the main growing season. It also rains here quite a bit, almost every day, so be sure to keep these things in mind when packing.

    Rainy Weather: Packing List
  • Tip Rating:
  • WHAT TO BRING
A collapsible umbrella that opens automatically is essential. A good raincoat (with liner) will be useful from March to October. It can get chilly in summer, so a sweater and/or
wind breaker is useful, especially for evenings. Something much warmer is needed from November to February. A good warm top coat, fur coat, or down ski parka with scarf, gloves, a ski or fur hat and warm zip-up boots (in dark brown or black for men) will be necessary. Note that the interiors of most buildings are usually well heated. Dress in layers.

Travel extremely light if you are moving from place to place, take a deep bag with you too so it's harder for pickpockets to get into.

You must have an umbrella, sunglasses, waterproof jacket and suncream with you at all times because the weather is that unpredictable in the summer!!!! It can start off extremely sunny and roasting hot then an hour later be chucking it down with rain! Then 10 mins later be sunny! You just never know!

paracetomel or painkillers as you may get a sore head from the humidity and changing weather!

Loadz of spools or memory cards and plenty of batteries! Trust me you will need them! I took 150 photos when I was in Russia! So much to see and do!

    Insect Repellent: Packing List
  • Tip Rating:
  • Take zipped bags for use in the city.

Comfortable walking shoes in spring/early summer

Mosquito repellent - in May and June the mozzies eat you alive! Pharmacists are very helpful when it comes to items such as eye drops for conjunctivitis. Many Russians prefer to visit the pharmacist rather than a doctor so pharmacists have a wealth of knowledge.

It is cheaper to have photographs developed in Russia (try the kiosks at metro stations - they work out even cheaper than the shop on Nevsky Prospekt.
