    Stolle: Pies, pies, pies

by nomadig Written Jun 24, 2010

    2.5 out of 5 starsHelpfulness

A friend of mine who had lived in St. Petersburg for many years recommended Stolle for any and all quick and tasty eats. The café chain that has several stores around the city is focusing on traditional Russian pies; heavy in filling (and fat), delicious in taste.

We didn't try the café part at all, just bought a piece of pie as a late snack in the hotel. The pies are not small ones -- we had half a portion and fed four people (two of them kids) with it and ate second time, too. The available pies depend on the season and your luck, we had excellent salmon and onion pie -- there were a couple of other choices available, too.

The clerks do not speak that much of English, but they are ready -- as Russians in general, it seems -- to go lengths to help you with the purchase.

Don't know: I can't even say what restaurants I went to

by lalikes Written Oct 10, 2008

    2 out of 5 starsHelpfulness

Half the time, my girlfriend and I would just randomly walk into some place, crossing our fingers that it was a restaurant. When you have a map with English writing in Russian and Cyrillic writing on street signs, you never know what you're going to get. It was a hoot. Then when it is a restaurant, the menu comes and you just pick whatever. Good times. We'd laugh our asses off sometimes at what we ordered. My girlfriend would be pissed if she knew I posted the photo below but I had to. I can't even tell you what we ordered except it had caviar on it. It was hilarious.

Boston rolls with cinnamon: Food: Cinnamon Rolls- found!

by sennaya Updated Dec 26, 2007

    2.5 out of 5 starsHelpfulness

Finally, a real cinnamon roll has appeared that you can find in St. Petersburg.

Until this time there were on dry sparsely sprinkled circular rolls purported to have cinnamon but without taste. No butter, hardly any cinnamon.

The best fresh cinnamon roll remains the Stockholm Coffee shop in Ikea, but now you can buy a pan of seven rolls from a local St. Petersburg bakery.
The big grocery stores do not carry them yet, but you can find them in small bakery shops and kiosks.
They also make them with raspberry and other fillings, so make sure it is cinnamon or koritsa.

Cinnamon rolls, mint chocolate, yellow mustard and maple syrup are American favorites virtually impossible to find in Russia. We welcome anyone with information about these items appearing!

Favorite Dish: Boston Cinnamon rolls, 65 rubles or $2+ for seven rolls.

    Gulf Cafe: Gulf Cafe

by sennaya Updated Oct 31, 2007

On Krestovsky Ostrov, where walking is such a pleasure, you can also stop at a remote patio cafe along the Finland Gulf.

They offer blankets if it is cold and hammocks for a unique peaceful setting.
There is a yacht club next door, just a small sign and you feel it might be a private place, but all are welcome.

Favorite Dish: Coffe and a view

Business Lunch: Use lunch to explore cafes and restaurants

by sennaya Updated May 20, 2007

    2.5 out of 5 starsHelpfulness

You can get a good sampling of food for a good price by going between noon and 4 pm. Many restaurants place business lunch sign on the street. Some meals are less than 100 rubles, good meals less than 200 rubles and I am too cheap to know what you get from more than that! Walk the streets off Nevsky and areas where people work like sennaya ploschad on Sadovaya street.

Favorite Dish: The best deal, the business lunch

grocery stores: Food: Plombir is delicious: Ice Cream

by sennaya Written May 10, 2007

Russian ice cream has its own flavor. You can buy Baskin and Robbins or Ben and Jerry's in bigger grocery stores, but local ice cream is cheaper and arguably better. I especially like Plombir, (pronounced Plum Beer) the first ice cream company in St. Petersburg. Generally it is light and melts in your mouth with good flavor. The lightness comes from the fact that it has a lot of air in it. It will float better than ice if you put it in coffee or start a milkshake. I like the vanilla with cocoa :)

Tandori: Oasis in a sea of Mayonnaise and Sour Cream

by Rassors Written May 2, 2007

All I wanted was a clean piece of chicken, no mayo, no sourcream, no sauce. I happened upon this restaurant and will now return each time I am back. I live in San Francisco and am familiar with Indian restaurants this one is very good. The interior is very nice, the wait staff could not have been frendlier and a the food excellant. I only had three dishes but am eager to try more. I was traveling alone on business and was made to feel comfortable and welcome.

Favorite Dish: The tandori chicken was perfect and the appetizers was excellant, don't rember which it was, but it was similar to fried not greasy dumplings like beggars purses, filed with a delightful meaty and spicy mixture. I am a big fan of onion nan and it was not on the menu. I told the waiter that and he said no problem we will make you some...It was the best I have ever had

cafe saint petersburg: great cakes here

    by call_me_rhia Updated Sep 4, 2006

    2.5 out of 5 starsHelpfulness

The cafe Saint Petersburg is a hole-in-the-wall right by the church if the spilled blood, serving great cakes... and, despite its touristy location - not geared at the tourist market.
In fact it was full of young people - possibly students. Very laid back...

Favorite Dish: I remember a delicious apple pie... and a not very delicious coffee.

    La Strada: really good pizzas

    by call_me_rhia Updated Sep 4, 2006

We came for the pizza, and we were not disappointed. The staff is helpful and friendly and the interior, which wants to look like a small Italian street with a Florentine balcony slightly tacky but not over-the-top.

Favorite Dish: we had quite good pizzas - in particular the salmon pizza. The salmon carpaccio was good, too. There's also a large salad bar, if you are interested

    caravan sarai: uzbek specialities

    by call_me_rhia Written Aug 16, 2006

    3.5 out of 5 starsHelpfulness

The restaurant is cosy and trying to recreate the ìnterior of a caravan serai. It would have succeeded if it had not been for the stuffed camels.

Favorite Dish: Amazing food - especially the grilled specialities - cooked to perfection. I also liked what looked like momos (although they were different in taste)
