 | Saint Petersburg Russian Cuisine Reviews | Tips 11 - 20 of 143 | | Every time I was near Metro Chernishevskaya, I stopped at Kolobok. This place is great! It's clean, cheap, nice bathroom, and there is an internet terminal which is absolutely FREE. It's upstairs. You have to stand at it, and you may have to wait a while if someone is already using it, but hey... free internet... The food is great, mostly light Russian dishes and pastries. The service is good too, but watch your tray - the efficient staff like to take away your food before you're done with it.
The egg and green onion pastry is highly recommended. I personally like the pastry "kartoshka" but some people don't. Leave a Comment Theme: LocalPrice: less than US$10 » Currency ConverterComparison: less expensive than averageAddress: Ulitsa Tchaikovsogo 40Directions: Near Chernishevskaya Metro

We wandered into this restaurant on our second visit to St. Petersburg in 2001and feasted on meat pancakes, chicken cutlets and several other things we couldn't quite identify at the time. We located it again on our trip in September 2003 and enjoyed it just as much as the first visit. The restaurant is cafeteria style, several of the servers spoke English and we had no problem ordering.

This cafe is decorated as an old apartment in an attic. On a twenty-four hour basis. From 19.30 to 22.30 you can hear music (jazz, piano, rock'n'roll, folk). You need to buy a ticket in the evening from 1 euro to 4 for locals (I don't know about foreigners). Lunch in the daytime less then 4 euro.

This bistro is located about half a block off of Nevsky Prospekt, which makes is convenient, but less busy and less expensive than places on the main street. They serve standard Russian basics ~ soups, dumplings, etc. I had a beef & vegetable stew and Mom had chicken kiev. The food was ready quickly, servings were hot and tasty and the bill was very reasonable. This cafe is located at the intersection of Kamennoostrovskiy Prospekt and Mira ulitsa; it's an architecturally interesting street and islocated not too far from Peter and Paul Fortress, therefore it makes an easy side trip for a good lunch. We had borscht and salads ~ bean, pasta and veggie. The bistro also had open-faced sandwiches, desserts and hot dishes. There's a handy glass-faced display case, designed for pointing and ordering. Very clean bathroom to boot. Leave a Comment Theme: LocalPrice: less than US$10 » Currency ConverterComparison: less expensive than averageAddress: Kamennoostrovskiy Prospekt at Mira Ulitsa

Be on the lookout for the glass globe/sign or you could very well miss Idiot. And, although it has the appearance of being very popular with tourists, that would be a shame. The basement restaurant is cozy and the food was excellent. Good, comforting, home-style dishes ~ mushroom-stuffed pelmeny, potatoes with mushrooms, etc. Each meal is served with a complimentary shot of vodka. . .and it's definitely not needed to prepare you for the food. ;-) Leave a Comment Theme: LocalPrice: US$11-20 » Currency ConverterComparison: about averageAddress: Nab. reki Moiki 82

Kavkaz Bar serves Georgian food in a small restaurant, bordered by a more informal cafe. I had lobio to start, which is a mildly spicy bean dish, and vegetable kebabs. Mom had mushroom soup and pork kebab. The food was very good, but overpriced. If you arrive at the Mariinsky a bit early, as we did in order to pick up our tickets, you'll find one of these little "drink tents" next to the Rimsky-Korsakov Conservatory, across the street. These tents are found all over the city. Sometimes you can get small food items, like pirozhki, but the main purpose is to serve alcohol and coffee. This one was very conveniently located for a pre-show drink. Leave a Comment Theme: Street VendorAddress: Teatralnaya PloshchadDirections: Located next to the Rimsky-Korsakov Conservatory

Teremok is the name of a series of fast food stands that you can find peppered around St. Petersburg (we saw three). The one we ate at was located at Manezhnaya Ploshchad, around the corner from our apartment on Italyanskaya Ulitsa. You order bliny from a menu posted on the stand ~ bliny are most easily compared to crepes. The shells are poured and cooked on hot burners when you order, then filled with your choice of items. Wanting to test the waters with a bit of caution, we both got cheese filled ones. Although not a gourmet meal, they were filling and very cheap ($4 for two). The stands are very popular with locals. . .seems like an ideal place to grab a bite on your way home or as a break during an evening of drink. Leave a Comment

This is the best of the fast food chains in St. Petersburg. They have fresh, tasty blini (thin pancake). For 75 rubles you get a hearty blini with smoked chicken and tasty sauce. You can eat for less than 100 rubles ($4) Unlike the popular Teaspoon restaurants or BlinDonalts, they know how to cook the blini fresh.
Blini! Blini are a little bit sweet, tasty with chicken, mushrooms or for dessert with jam or apples.
