    The Hermitage is one of the Top museums in the world so one cannot miss it. Previosuly, it was the residence of the Russian Tsars
    The first thing that strikes you is the enormous size of the building.
    The Light green color is also interesting. Inside, the museum is split in various sections, decide which areas you want to visit cause it will be impossible to view everything.
    I am not arts guru however I enjoyed the visit here.

    While you are taking in the ridiculous extent of wealth displayed in the Winter Palace (Hermitage), keep in mind that the palace, like the city itself, was built at a breakneck pace by tens of thousands of poor serfs, many of whom died in the process. Petersburg is a "city built upon bones".

    From the 1760s the Winter Palace was the main residence of the Russian Tsars. It was built between 1754 and 1762 for Empress Elizabeth, the daughter of Peter the Great. Unfortunately Elizabeth died before the palace was ready. Many of the palace’s interiors have been remodeled since then, particularly after 1837 when a huge fire destroyed most of the building.
    Today the Winter Palace houses collections of the Hermitage. The Hermitage Museum is the largest art gallery in Russia and is one of the largest and most respected art museums in the world.
    The museum was founded in 1764 when Catherine the Great purchased a collection of 255 paintings from Berlin. Today it has over 2.7 million exhibits from all over the world and from throughout history, from Ancient Egypt to the early 20th century Europe.

    The 4th Largest Museum in Europe, the Hermitage is an impressive museum to see art work, artifacts, coins, and other interesting artifacts.

    While there, I saw a Michelangelo sculpture on visit. Then, the permanent collection has works by Matisse, check out the one painting by Matisse called "the argument" and look at the expression on the man's face and imagine how angry his wife is at him and how glad you are to not be that man. I don't like Matisse, but love the expression he put on that man's face.

    Also, two of DaVinci's 19 paintings can be found at the Hermitage. Both beautiful ones, better than London National's DaVinci's.

    The Rembrandts are superb and from his many periods and stages of life.

    There are at least 30+ Picassos as well.

    One problem with this superbly decorated museum is that it is very crowded. Do try and arrive early as you may have to wait or not be permitted entry in rooms with tour groups.

    Although the Hermitage is a zoo (at least it was while I was there this mid-September), you'll have a wonderful time here. Allocate at least 2-5 hours of time here.

    Maybe the main reason to come to St Petersburg (at least for me).

    It was Catherine the Great that started the collection that has subsequently grown to over 3 million items and encompassing all the Winter palace (used as a residence by tsars) and Little, Old and New Hermitage (buildings built since the beginning as a museum).

    To visit, several advices:

    Arrive early (or reserve through the website) - even in november, there were queues of more than one hour if you came after 1pm

    Have good shoes and take a map at the information desk - you will walk a lot, not helped by the fact that some of the rooms are under restoration, so often you will visit one exposition to retrace your steps back.

    Look around (actually one of the features we admired the most were the magnificent rooms in which the works of art are exposed)

    If lost, ask - we would have never found the french art collection on the 3rd floor without the help of the guardians.

    You have several decent cafes inside offering the usual fare of sandwiches/pizza/salad, so you can really spend a whole day inside.

    Open from 10.30 till 18.00 Tue-Sat, till 17.00 on Sundays, closed on Mondays

    A copy of mosaics from the floors of Roman spas, this section of the floor in the Pavilion Hall was absolutely beautiful. . .a definite highlight.

    The rest of the hall is striking as well ~ white marble and gold trim. . .with a strange but notice-worthy gold clock in the form of a peacock.

    Cost of entry was 320 rubles per person in May 2003 (approximately 10 usd). An extra 100 rubles is charged for camera (no flash, of course). The ticket includes the Winter Palace and the other Hermitage collections.

    There is a self-service cafeteria in the building; we stayed through lunch and had pizzas and pop. Normal prices for museum food (ie. not cheap).

    Having moved out of the State Rooms and into the large Hermitage building (or new Hermitage. . .it's difficult to tell while you're in the thick of it), we entered a few of the collection rooms.

    If you've seen Russian Ark, you'll probably recognize this room. . .the movie's "guide" spent some time with his friends here. I saw the film shortly before the trip and have to admit that it failed to build any interest around visiting the Hermitage (for me). . .thankfully, the museum is far more interesting than the movie.

    Some of the caryatids on display are real, others (higher up on the walls) are simply painted for effect.

    The interior of the Winter Palace was largely destroyed by fire in 1837, then rebuilt by Vasily Stasov, who is said to have toned down the original design. Considering the amount of detail and decoration, it's hard to imagine how the original could have appeared busier. :-)

    If the rooms that follow feel a bit cold and unlivable ~ they were. They were designed primarily as a display of power; the comfort of home was secondary.
