Museums: The Russian Museum (Part II)
  • Tip Rating:
  • The museum's art collection is laid out in chronological order. . .fantastic for watching the progression of themes and techniques. I tore the applicable pages from my Rough Guide and carried them through, adding to the educational aspect.

There is a decent cafeteria (no more expensive than museum cafeterias at home) to grab lunch if you spend the day, as we did.

Museums: The Strelka ~ Naval Museum (Detail)
  • Tip Rating:
  • The sculpture that sits atop the former Stock Exchange is of Neptune, in a chariot drawn by sea horses.

The Strelka was the main port for the city for over one hundred years, so the ties between the city and its rivers and canals are heavily present here. . .as well as in many other spots.

When traveling, I'm much more interested in visiting a museum filled with national art than simply "impressive" art. Time is precious and I'd rather be soaking up the atmosphere of the country I am in, in every way possible, than admiring borrowed treasures.

So, visiting the Russian Museum was a priority for me. . .and it fulfilled every expectation.

    Museums: Central Naval Museum
  • Tip Rating:
  • The Central Naval Museum is one of the oldest museums in Russia. The Museum originated in the St. Petersburg Model Chamber founded by Peter I in 1709. In 1939 the Central Naval Museum was transferred to the Stock Exchange building, the focal point of the best architectural ensembles in St. Petersburg - the Spit (Strelka) of Vasilyevsky Island. All history of the Russian fleet has found reflection in exposure and extensive assembly of a museum. For almost three centuries of the existence the museum became by the integral part of Naval Fleet, and history of a museum - by a part Naval history.

    Museums: Blockade Museum
  • Tip Rating:
  • This is an impressive but slightly dark museum about the blockade during 2ndWW. It contains lots of photos, artefacts and documents as well as paintings etc.

Well worth a visit, if you are interested in the cities history and are there for a longer period of time.

Free entry with a Russian student card.

    Museums: Cruisser Aurora
  • Tip Rating:
  • It is located in the Neva river opposite Hotel St Petersbourg.
On the night of 25th October 1917 this cruisser fired the Winter Palace: this was the begining of the October Revolution. Lenin was at that time coming from Finland by train.
And this is Misha (VTr from St Pet) and me.

If you live and breathe Russian politics from whatever century, or you are a student of Russian studies, then you must check out the Russian Political History Musuem.

Adult costs 60 rub., student 10 rub., but the biggest bargain is the English-speaking guide which costs 500 rub. Sure it sounds a lot, but this is a serious tour from a qualified curator of the museum who speaks very good English.

It lasted 3 hours and the personal guide answered in depth and in detail over every facet of Russian politics I could think of and which the exhibits prompted. Seriously good value for students of the subject.

The museum was actually the place where Lenin spoke to his fans from the balcony and had his office for a while.

    Museums: Soviet defence of Leningrad
  • Tip Rating:
  • Poor old Petersburg. It didn't have what the British call a 'good war'. It was under siege for almost 900 days in the Great Patriotic War by the NAZIs and this 'Museum of the Blockade of Leningrad' commemorates and shows the horrors experienced by the populace of which 2/3rds perished.

This is quite a good musuem, and knowledge of Russian is not mandatory at all. There are some good German Army artefacts such as a dagger with 'My honour remains true' written on the side.

To understand the indomitable spirit of Russia and St.Petersburg, one must understand their history of privation and invasion. Here is a good a place to start as any.

Pushkin's tale of thwarted passion, destructive lust, and unrequited love in his greatest work, Eugene Onegin, might just as well have mirrored his own life and death.

It is well known that he was killed in a pistol duel (c.f. 'Die, Pushkin, Die' tip), but perhaps less well-known is that he lived in a grand house very close to the centre of St.Petersburg.

You have to be a fan of literature to come here, but presuming that you are, then marvel at Pushkin's collection of walking sticks, the actual pistols used in the duel and his library.

As with every Russian musuem, you will have to wear those weird over-slipper things which go over your shoes. The obligatory babushki will follow your every move once in.

    Museums: Wooly mammoth.
  • Tip Rating:
  • Another view of the mammoth inside its glass display case... I was really stunned to see this mammoth. It's amazing to see in person a corpse of this now extinct species and to understand the deep implications of it...
