I went to the literary graveyard as a kind of impromptu romantic date with the brunette who skipped some classes that afternoon. It turned out to be closed but we managed to get in. Everything was cool until a militsia turned up with a massive evil-looking dog ordering us to get out. The brunette charmed him (the militsia, not the dog) and we spent another 10 minutes wandering around. Its in the south of the city and contains such stars as Goncharov, Belinksii and Dobroliubov. Other attractions include famous academicians, scientists (Prof. Pavlov), physicians and the poet Anna Akhmatova I believe.

You will remember traveling by the city underground called the Metro. It is so clean, comfortable and reliable! You can reach the remotest districts of the city in no time! It saves you the precious time and energy and is quick and beautiful in the interior. The stations are like small underground palaces. The builders did not spare granite and lavishly decorated each station in Soviet times.

Gazprom, the world's largest natural gas producer, is planning to build a new corporate building/monument across from the Smolny Cathedral on the Neva river. Almost the entire downtown is named as significant historical structures by Unesco. St. Petersburg has a beautiful, almost uninterrupted historic skyline. A colored-lighted TV tower at 30 meters was an aberration. Now Gazprom will make a 300-meter tower right on the Neva. It would become the dominant feature on the skyline which up to this time consists of mostly 4-5 story old buildings. The Spires of cathedrals and churches were the visual landmarks up until this time. The Gazprom tower has created some controversary because of the historical nature of St. Petersburg and the waterfront. But in Russia it is still difficult to fight big money with aesthetic ideals. The 300-meter RMJM "Corn on the Cob" tower won the contest and was announced by Governor Valentina Matviyenko and Gazprom CEO Alexei Miller. The building wikll change colors 10 tems a day in the sunlight and be the centerpiece of "Gazprom City." The project has many critics and should be a test of developer vs. heritage in St. Petersburg. It seems St. Petersbug is destined to become an ecclectic mix of old and new structures.

Kazan Cathedral is quite magnificent and is right opposite Dom Knigi (House of Books) in the middle of Nevski Prospekt. It is difficult to miss this semi-circular monolith with all those columns. The real thing to notice here is the large amount of vagrants and unemployed youths swigging back Baltika or something stronger likes its gone out of fashion. I understand that one can actually go inside, but since I was usually waiting outside for a date I didn't actually go in. Note: the photo is a scanned in postcard, hence the poor quality.

  • Tip Rating:
  • You may ask where's the bridge. Well, that's exactly what i thought when I saw this saqure. The bridge measures 97 meters and currently function as a traffic circle and a parking lot. This bridge is called "Blue Bridge" and was built of iron in 1818. Later it was reconstructed and widened.

Visit the so called Engineers Castle downtown. It was built by the Emperor Paul the First at the end of the 18th century. It was to be his refuge, which was to no avail, however. The emperor was overthrown in 1801 by his son's team and murdered by the guards. I have read a book published by the Russian Orthodox Church. The Orthodox Church is sure that the murder had been carefully planned and conducted by the Russian masons whose interference into Russian affairs in the 19th century was very sheer and outraging.

One of the most popular excursions from St. Petersburg is to take the night train to Moscow. You leave near midnight and 7 hours later you are in Moscow. You can spend the day at the Kremlin, Red Square and even the Tretiakov Gallery. Then in the evening take another train back to St. Petersburg. You don't need a hotel. (especially since the affordable Rossiya is torn down) You can even reserve you own coupe for up to 4 people and have your own room on the train. Otherwise, you may have some roommates in the coupe or even for less money in the open sleeping cars.

    Other Attractions: The Bronze Horseman
  • Tip Rating:
  • This monument, a tribute by Catherine the Great, is dedicated to the founder of St. Petersburg, Peter The Great. It stands on Senatskaia Square, right next to the Neva River near St Isaac's Cathedral. According to a legend, enemy forces will never take St. Petersburg while the statue stands in the city. And indeed, St. peterburg was not occupied during the Second World War.

The commonly celebrated date for Christmas, December 25, is not an official holiday in Russia. but there is a Santa Claus (Ded Moroz) parade on Nevsky Prospekt and a big concert on Palace Square. Russian Orthodox Christmas is January 7, the end of the official New Yew Holidays January 1-7. Orthodox Christmas is a religious holiday with some special masses. Most people stray home and celebrate quietly with the family. In St. Petersburg the city decorates about 85 big trees earely in December and they stay up until mid-January. Notice the ornaments are high on the tree to deter "borrowing." On Dec. 24 in 2006 there was a Ded Moroz (Grandfather Frost, Santa Claus) parade that closed Nevsky Prospekt. Many people folow the parade to Palace Sqaure on Nevsky Prospect. Usually it is followed by a concert on the square. The sqaure is filled with people. On New Year's Eve the Palace Square is jammed. Entrance is free and there is a lot of music and dancing inthe sub-zero weather. A real Russian experience if you are up to the cold night weather.
