Palaces: Catherine the Great's Summer Palace
  • Tip Rating:
  • Catherine the Great's Summer Palace (also known as the Catherine Palace) is located in the town of Tsarskoye Selo, about 20 miles outside of St. Petersburg. The palace is immense, and is surrounded by hundreds of acres of parks and gardens, with dozens of smaller buildings. The palace and grounds are open to tourists, and are definitely worth visiting. The interior rooms of the palace are very ornate and beautiful. The palace's most famous feature is the Amber Room, whose walls are entirely covered by intricated panels made out of amber. The original wall panels from the amber room were stolen during World War II, but new panels were fabricated to match them during the past decade.

    Palaces: Yusupov's Palace
  • Tip Rating:
  • This is also a very nicely renovated palace, they have taken major things from this palace and put it in Hermitage Museum, but the palace is really amazing.

Yusupov was basically a muslim (Initially he was called Yousuf) and he was also not a member of royal family but his family was quite affluent and considered to be one of the richest family of that area. I forgot but one of his son or daughter married someone in the royal family.

This palace is really worth a visit the architecture and furniture used by them at that time is really amazing.

One of his family member (female, i forgot the name) used to be good in acting, so she used to have dramas and plays in that palace so the picture I have posted is one of the arenas in that palace

When the fountains are turned on, the lower garden of Peterhof comes alive. So many different kinds of fountains all over the place, and they're all so beautiful. When we went in July of 2008 there were musical presentations in different areas of the garden -- an aria, a band, a symphony orchestra, etc.

We took a hydrofoil right across from the Hermitage, which took only 30 minutes to get to Peterhof. It costs 700 Roubles for a roundtrip ticket or 400 Roubles for a one way ticket. The Hydrofoil's last trip from Peterhof leaves at 6:00 in the evening.

    Palaces: Yusupov Palace
  • Tip Rating:
  • I can't say enough good things about the Yusupov Palace. Of all the splendid palaces I saw in St. Petersburg, this was my favorite. It was in fabulous condition, very rich and luxe, and the rooms were incredibly tasteful in their decor--not something you can always say about the gilded rooms of the Tsars.

Highlights include a Moroccan bath, a private art gallery, and a private home theater.

In the basement you can see where Felix Yusupov first tried to kill Rasputin.

A deluxe gift shop is the last stop on the tour. These are not your typical souvenirs and their high quality is reflected in their price. Pack your wallet. You will want to buy something, but you'll need many rubles.

  • Directions: Pterodvorets is located about 20 miles from central St. Petersburg. The best way to get there from St. Petersburg is by boat. There is a direct boat service, which leaves from a dock located behind the Hermitage museum.

Peterhoff is one of Peter the Great's Palaces outside of St. Petersburg. There are many rooms and this particular room with guilded interiors is the portrait room.

I think it's nicely set up and great to look at.
