This is the historical heart of St. Petersburg laid by Peter the Great on May 16th, 1703 on two islands Zayachy Island and Petrogradsky Island. It was built in quiet a rush as a military fortress right in the beginning of St. Petersburg.

This large museum could be the oldest part of the city since peter the Great commissioned this fortress to be built to start the construction of his great city. This fortress is surrounded by walls, and has several noteworthy structures on the property. the centerpiece is the cathedral with its huge spire. This is a great place to begin to explore the eventful history of the city. It is also nice to view it from the other side of the Neva River to appreciate its size and beauty.

The Peter and Paul Fortress vis-?-vis the Eremitage across the river Neva is a nice and quiet place for strolling around.
Walk on the wall and enjoy the view, splendid.
But be aware, don't brake the many rules on this island ---> see the pic!

The building of the fortress was the start of the city. Although mostly used as a prsion through the years, the fortress is probably one of the city's most recognisable sights. The wonderful Peter and Paul Cathedral stands within and is the resting place of the tsars and tsarinas. Other buildings within the complex include the mint and city museum amongst many others.

Founded in 1703 by Peter the great, Peter and Paul's fortress is the first construction built in S.Petersburg, and around which the city has developed.
Untill the revolution,it was used primarily as a jail (it's possible to visit it) ...among the many important people who have been imprisoned here, we just recall the son of Peter, Aleksey, and Dostojevskij.

the cathedral, with it's nice golden spire, is the most important building inside the fortress; inside the cathedral there are the tombs of many zars and their families...also the tomb of Peter the Great.

from the fortress you can admire a nice view of the of the city on the opposite bank of Neva river...in particular, far away on your left, the white Smolny cathedral, in front of you the winter's palace, then, on your right, the admiralty golden spire, S.Isaac's cathedral cupola, and then Vasilevskij island, with the building of naval museum between the 2 characteristic red rostral columns

There was a crew filming this while we were there.
The legend had it that who touches the czar's forefinger will have his/her wishes come true.
The end result? Long queus!!!
Everyone wants dreams fulfiled!
I guess I did too ;-)
Designed by Michail Kemiakin, the monument to Peter was donated to the city in 1991. He now lives in the U.S.

We were entertained by the choir while on the way out.
However, I remembered my guide telling us to mind our bags & wallets. Pick-pocketeers!!!
In a church!
Well, that's not unusual... it happened in many European cities.
But, what's unusual was what my Russian guide said.
They were just trying to survive, he said.
Also, he actually told us he saw them in action while we were there!!! Yet, he kept quiet! I don't know what to make out of that!
