    I read in a book that St. Petersburg's metro is the deepest subway in the world. Now I know what this means. We entered the metro station and saw the beginning of an escalator but no end. We stepped on it and were carried down, and down and down and.... It took over one minute.

    Finally at the end we saw billions of people but no metro. We were pushed to the left, then to the right, back and forth and so on. Finally we were pushed into one of the metros and couldn't budge inside. It was not easy to escape the crowds.

    Admission is 7 Rubels (0.20 €)

  • Although not as extensive as the metro in Moscow, the metro system in St. Petersburg is a cheap and efficient way to get to many places in the city.

    The cost was 7 rubles per trip, you are given a token to insert into the turnstyle.

    If you are having trouble with reading the cyrillic alphabet, a trick to use is counting the stops between where you started and where you end up, also not a bad idea considering that sometimes you can't see the name of the station until after you have passed through it.

    The Metro consists of 4 lines with 58 stations.... it works from 5.45 till 24.00. One token cost 7 rubles (it is valid for the whole ride). Tokens you can buy at all Metro stations.

  • The Metro offers an excellent way of getting around the city. Some of the stations offer displays of artwork. The ride up and down the escalators is a journey within itself. Because of the marshy terrain that the city was built on, the rail tracks themselves are a long way underground. You will see some of the locals reading their newspapers during their ride on the escalators.

    There are four lines with all of the central places of interest being accessible using the system. More outlying areas of the city may require the use of another form of transport.

    Most people arrive at Saint Petersburg at Pulkovo airport, that is situated pretty far from the centre. Taxidrives are recommendable, but expensive. Buss is another option, but only if you are able to speak/read the Russian language. A cheap, but maybe doubtful way, is car-sharing. First walk a while from the airport (if you don't carry heavy luggage) and get alongside a road. Stick out your hand and (soon) a car will stop. Tell where you're heading for and negotiate a price (languageproblem?). Many Russians drivers take 'carpoolers' (say hitchhikers) to lower the expenses of having a car.
    Peterburg has four mayor trainstations. The busiest one is Moskvastation where trains arrive from and leave for Moskva (among which the famous 'Red Arrow').
    Another way of arriving is by boat. Some cruiseships arrive in Peterburg harbour on their tour through the Baltic.
    The metrosystem (subway) of Peterburg consists of three lines and is efficient. You can use it if you basically know Cyrillic to be able to read the names of stations.
    Busses are more difficult, as the busdriver will obviously not understand English. By the way, he is not responsible for the tickets as on every buss a conductor sells them.
    Privat persons and little companies offer boatrides on the canals, which is an absolute must for anyone that wants to visit Saint Petersburg (a hole in the touristmarkets is in my opinion a regular canalboatservice or canalbuss). A jetfoil connects Saint Petersburg with the Peterhof.

  • Walking in St. P is easy if you are located near the center. There is also a subway system, not as attractive or necessary as in Moscow. We avoided cabs in St. P. They might be ok though. We could get anywhere we wanted to go by foot.

  • Metro. It is an excellent Metro, like the one in Moscow. Beautifully decorated. It is a little bit more expensive than Moscow, 50 rubbles for 10 rides. Instead of cards like in Moscow, you get coins.

    Airport: Pulkovo II International , 17km south of the city centre, about a half-hour taxi ride and about an hour by public transport.
    The best way of getting around the city is by metro (it is the quickest and cheapest way).
