Late model Lada. ..3 of 8 cars in pic are British! by mwe If Chevrolet is the iconic American brand, then Lada is surely the car that symbolises Russia and (especially) the latter years of the USSR. I feel this page will be incomplete without paying tribute to this modern classic. Lada is the brand name which the cars made by Autovaz (ABTOBA3) are known by in the west. Lada first came to Britain at the 1973 London motorshow & debuted in 1980 in Canada. They were never sold in the USA. After a slow start in Britain, Ladas became very popular during the late 1970s & 1980s. When you looked at their prices & saw what alternatives were available for Lada money you can see why: In 1979 in Britain (source: "What Car?" March, 1979), a 4-door Lada 1200 saloon cost £2,056. The Lada 1200's rivals on price included the 3-wheel, 2-door Reliant Robin (£2042) & the basic Mini 850, £2157. The Lada 1200 was based on the 1966-'74 Fiat 124. The price rival in the 1979 Fiat range was a 127 900L at £2272. Cars that were physically comparable to the £2056 Lada 1200 in its 1979 UK heyday included Vauxhall's Chevette 1256E 4-door at £2566. Ford Popular Plus 1300 4-door £2671. Morris Marina 1300 4-door, £2967. Fiat 131 1300L 4-door, £3016 and Triumph Dolomite 1300, £3265. The classic Fiat 124-shape Lada is still sold today as the 1.5-litre 2105 3 and the more upmarket 2107 which has a posher grille, high-back seats & a 1.6-litre option: these cars used to be sold in Britain as the Lada Riva. The collapse of the USSR spooked the market & new Lada sales ceased in Britain in the 1990s.

Traffic in St-Petersburg is quite crazy. I prefer to move in there by metro, bus or marshrutka. Marshrutka is a share taxi in Russia. The role of the modern Marshrutka is basically similar to the minibus in other countries except some implementations of Marshrutka do allow standing capacity. The cars, what moving on the streets of the city, are usually very expensive (Hummer limousines) or in bad condition russian cars (Lada). Often the traffic rules not matter for drivers. So we saw, when one driver stop the car right on the pedestrian crossing and started to read the newspaper. I put in here one photo about militsia (russian police) car too.
