In my opinion the main danger for Irkutsk is losing its historical identity which you can still find in the centre of the city that still kept hundreds of wooden houses.
But you will also see huge ugly modern houses that go forward and replaces old tiny houses...

If you are staying in the city center, taxis would not like to go to short distances such as train station. The taxis in front of the hotels are looking for passengers to go to airport (long distance) so nobody cares a short distance. Be early or arrange your taxi beforehand.

Hi folks,
few days (12.07.08) ago I got back from St.Petersburg and Moscow and on the way back home (Ulan-Ude) had to pass part of the road, about 300 km total, where time to time where parts of the road 40-50 km with no asfalt or no road at all.
So, for those who plan to use this road this summer, please consider this fact that to pass these 300 km you can spend whole day.
I'll attach few pics of this road.
Also, the cost of fuel in Irkutsk region jumps from 22-23 roubles (approximately 1 USD) per 1 liter, to 29 r. (1,25 USD) for 1 liter, just for calculation your expenses.
If you would need any advice or have questions, can write me or call during the day (at night I'm off :-) +7 914 637 6333, Oleg
Have a nice trip!!!
