  • By boat down the Angara to Listvyanka

    Irkutsk Things to Do

Most tourists will probably want to visit Lake Baikal, the world's oldest, deepest lake and an astonishing reserve of freshwater on planet earth. I went by boat from Raketa port (close to the Angara steamship at the south of Irkutsk) at 9am, returning at 6.30pm. The nearest stop, one hour away, is the small town of Listvyanka (also reachable by bus...

    Irkutsk Transportation

Other forms of transport include the trolleybus and taxis (which are not as common here as in some cities) so the local buses provided all of my journeys where I didn't walk. From the train station, the number 116 is a great service line, going all the way down Lenin Street to the Angara port and steamship at the southern point of the city. When...

    Listvyanka Warnings and Dangers

On one of our evenings in town, a group of young men came up to our table after midnight. They were insisted on us buying them a pizza! They were being quite direct about having it and were pleading that they were starving and had no money to get themselves one. Eventhought that story doesn't have a bad ending to it, you do realise that misery and...

On weekdays, nightlife is not very heavy in Listvyanka. Nevertheless, a bottle of vodka, a few friends, and a stupid card drinking game can entertain any evening.

One of the best stops that you can make on the BAM is Bratsk (another one is Severobaikal). I was fortunate enough to visit both of them.
In Bratsk, near Padunskiye Porogi, you can visit a Reservoir—one of the world's largest, and Bratsk Hydroelectric Power Station.

When you are driving to Listvyanka by car from Irkutsk you have to make a stop at Bol’shaya Rechka, leave a car, come to the bank of the Angara River, admire its beauty and breathtaking view at the Baikal Lake and drink a bottle of vodka to...
