Citizens of Schenen are, UK and Japan can get a visa valid for 72 hours vithout the usual obstacles of receiving a Russian visa (invitation, presenting your passport personally at the embassy etc) Just prepare a couple of week before, all is done by e-email: you present your hotel reservation, you pay 70 Euro + 30 Euro for the officer of the...

  • 'Kenig'

Locals call their city 'Kenigsberg' or just 'Kenig', as the Cyrilic alphabet has no equivalent for the German ?. The university proudly calls itself Albertina, like its German predecessor. These are just two of many symptoms of the big change the city is going through. Living in an area that's officially Russian but seperated by the rest of Russia...

Kaliningrad Off The Beaten Path

    nicely decorated picnic place

    1.5 out of 5 starsHelpfulness

The wonderful landscape is quite the same as in the Northern (Lithuanian) part but you do not find such nicely kept fishermen villages here. Places like the former Pillkoppen or Rossitten look neglected and ruined - the difference to Lithuania is a veritable cultural shock, but both was half a century under the same Soviet rule and the whole area - the Lithuanian part of the Couronian Spit included - was an off-limits military zone.

  • Wild beaches and open-hearted people

It's really worth to see the coastal part of the Baltic sea that stretches through Russian territory as there you can find different beaches from ours in Lithuania. • Both untouched and ruined

On the countryside you can drive through beautyful long old alleys with wonderful trees, in Summer resembling almost green tunnels. Such alleys were cut down almost everywhere else in Europe because of reconstruction of the roads and of traffic security reasons.
