Top Kaliningradskaya Oblast' hotels
The village of Mayovka, formerly Georgenburg, hosts a large stud farm with riding facilities and a hotel at the Georgenburg estate, that also in Russia goes by it's old name again. The village is situated a few km's to the northwest of Cherna'howsk (formerly Insterburg), the second town of the Oblast some 80km east of Kaliningrad.
The surrounding area offers enough distraction, like a visit to the local castle (still waiting to be restored) or shopping in and exploring Cherna'howsk itself.Georgenburg offers (hotel)accomodation at a reasonable price and outdoor activities, mainly (of course) riding.
Svetlogorsk, Rauschen in German times, has developed once more into a "booming" beach resort with renovated hotel, B&B-villa's, seaside restaurants and bars and a market full of local products (like a pot of mushrooms for 50 Eurocents).It has become fairly popular for tourists form Russia, most of all Kaliningrad itself but also further afield. It has a charm of its own, not comparible (so we've heard) from the resorts at the Black Sea but for many Russians a good alternative to them!
See some things that I didn't and learn about the region's fascinating history. Go to the castle of Georgenburg (Maewka) or see castle ruins in Ragnit (Neman) and Balga (Vesyoloe) . Or see the wonderfully restored churches of Neuhausen (Gurjewsk), Tapiau (Gwardejsk), Mühlhausen (Gvardeyskoe) or Friedland (Pravdinsk). Or see what's left of the stud farm of Trakehnen (Jasnaja Poljana). Or go to the beach in Rauschen (Swetlogorsk.) and visit the museum about sculptor Hermann Brachert . And why not enjoy the environmental beauty of the Couronian Split?
