    One can see that one is in the furthest corner of Russia. Since the break up of the Soviet Union little has been done here to change the ‘architecture’ of the fast built socialistic buildings. Some areas I was astonished that actually someone lived in those buildings, and how people survive here during the harsh winter times.

    We landed about 90 km inland in a valley that makes out the Nalitchevo Park. The surroundings were volcanoes of more then 4000 meters height. This park can also be reached on foot or skies from Petropavlovsk and is a three to four day hike.

    This region is accessed only by air or cruise ships , no ferries or trains are availibale. This year all direct flights from the USA were cancelled :-( So now travellers can go via MOscow (daily flights ) or via Vladivostok ( http://www.discoveryclub.info/services/air_travel.php ) or Khabarovsk.

    Of course , if you are in Petro - you need to go and buy red caviar or smoked salmon or something like that. Go down hotel Avacha - there is a large open air market where you'll find all of that at a very best prices. Everything is labeled with price so you just need to point at what you want. They even allow to try everything before buying :-)

    Kamchatka is a special border zone so have your documents in order. Registration, tourist vouchers are important. If you've traveled all over Russia with no registration or lost some documents there is a big chance that migration won't let you in! Be careful
