Petropavlosk Kamchatkiy

by XenoHumph

We hardly stayed in the capital of Kamchatska. Put right away into 4X4 trucks, we headed South towards the Gorely/Mudnovsky volcano region.Petropavlovsk is located in a beautiful setting along a marvelous bay surrounded by volcanoes (namely Koryaksky, Avachinsky and Kozelsky volcanoes) and with the Pacific ocean to the West.

Petropavlovsk-Kamchatskiy

by Ilya_Andriy

Since 1956 Kamchatka has started its quick development and persistent approaching to the modern state, when it became the self-dependent oblast. The city quickly passed the stage of the medium-sized town and began to change into the big city of the Far-East. If one looks at Petropavlovsk-Kamchatskiy from the scenery view site of the Petrovskaya Hill, he will see the city-bird, throwing its wings along the shores of beautiful Avacha Bay. Today Petropavlovsk-Kamchatskiy with the population of 205,500 is a modern, industrial, city-port. It became real scientific and cultural center of Kamchatka. And in some spheres (volcanology and seismology) it became the only scientific center of the Far-East and Russia. The cultural life of the city is greatly affected by: Drama Theatre, Puppet Theatre, music school, music technical school, the Museum of local Lore, The Museum of Battle Glory, the...

Ust-Kamchatskiy Region

by Ilya_Andriy

The main water artery of this region is the Kamchatka river. It crosses almost the entire peninsula. But, in this region, supported by many tributaries, it becomes large and navigable and slowly moves into the Pacific ocean. Today as it has throughout history, the economy of the region depends on this river. Travelling along this river Cossacks discovered Kamchatka and built the first settlements and forts. There are two special features of this region. Divided in two halves by the river this region includes two very different parts of Kamchatka: central and northern. Even simpler: forest and tundra, warmth and cold ocean winds. The second distinct feature of this region is the Klyuchevskaya group of volcanoes, the largest group of volcanoes in kamchatka, which are located in the southeast. The administrative center of the region is the settlement of Ust-Kamchatsk. You can come here by...

Ust-Kamchatsk

by Ilya_Andriy

Ust-Kamchatsk lies on the mouth of the Kamchatka River. And as a matter of fact it is the second largest port in Kamchatka. The area around Ust Kamchatsk is also very famous for its Russian American history and the place where the Cossacks established their first fort. The original fort was actually in Klutchi but it burned down in 1731 and was rebuilt in Nizhne Kamchatsk.

Geyser Valley

by XenoHumph

Geyser Valley and Uzon Caldera are part of the same volcano-tectonic (i.e., collapsed volcano) depression. Geyser Valley is located in the Geysernaya river valley, Southeast of the depression, and characterized by a high concentration of geysers and hot springs. It is a fantastic site!!One geyser typically discharges 30 tons of water in one short burst, every 2 to 10 hours. There are several dozens of geysers concentrated along less than a mile (1 km) of the river, of all sizes and types. The colorful rock deposits associated with the geysers and hot springs are called geyserites (surprise, surprise!!) and are made mainly of silica (tridimite, cristobalite and opal, and even fossilized diatoms). This is the only place in Kamchatka where there were boardwalk paths to walk on, similar to what you find in any North American parks!

Helicopter flight over volcanoes

by XenoHumph

This is something you must absolutely do if you go to Kamchatka: take a helicopter ride!! Even if it is expensive, it is well worth it! You will have an unforgettable experience of stunning and grandiose landscapes, close-up of all types of volcanoes, fly-by rivers and lakes...If you go to Uzon Caldera and Geyser Valley, the only way is by helicopter from Petropavlovsk, so you can't escape it!The picture shows the crater of volcano Maly-Semiachik , one of the most spectacular I have seen because of its light blue colored lake. This is due to very tiny particles of silica and sulfur in suspension in the lake with the sunlight reflecting and refracting on them. By the way, you do not want to have a swim in this lake, or even take a boat ride; it is extremely acid (PH = 1!!)... you, your boat or anything would burn and dissolve right away!!! This is an "eye-only" lake...

Mudnovsky Geothermal Field

by XenoHumph

This was quite a site! The russians were building a geothermal station to use the geothermal energy to make electricity. The project started in 1978. In 1995, they had a few turbines already going strong. I do not know how the project is going now in 2003.The main impression of the site was of total desolation and slaughter of a huge area. The russians had trashed several square miles (without counting the surroundings of the road from Petropavlovsk) of beautiful land and left there to rust the carcasses of inumerable machines, trucks and delapidated buildings. Very haunting scene!-

Climbing Mudnovsky volcano

by XenoHumph

Mudnovsky is another active volcano of Kamchatka: 16 explosions since 1848, the last one in March 2000! So the pictures you see on this website show you the state of the volcano in 1995 before the last eruption.Hiking up to the top of Mudnovsky is a fantastic experience. It takes 4 to 5 hours to get to the top, 2-3 hours to get down. There are not really trails, so follow your guide closely. You cross haunting landscape of rock, glaciers and snow. On top you pass next to fumerolles (careful, very hot, around 100 ºC, but up to 320 ºC!!) and bright yellow sulfur deposits. It smells of rotten eggs (SO2 gas vapors)... At the end of the hike, you may climb up to the rims of one of the active craters. Finally the view going down is breathtaking.-

Uzon Caldera

by XenoHumph

A caldera is a collapsed volcano. This one is huge, 9X12 km, round shape with steep cliffs all around, and 2 peaks dominating, Mount Krasnaya (1320 m) and Baranii Peak (1614 m). The floor of the caldera is flat (650 m elevation) and crisscrossed with cold and warm lakes. Deep hot thermal water rising from the volcano magma chamber interacting with surface water infiltration create a stunning geothermal filed, with boiling rivers, mudpots and various bubbling features.Uzon Caldera and Geyser Valley are part of the same volcano-tectonic (i.e., collapsed volcano) depression. In the picture, you can see the steep inner side of the caldera, one of the dominating peak in the background (I do not know which, sorry!) and a hot creek/lake with, in particular, a boiling pool bottom right.
