'Art Salon': Gift shop
Out of all traditional Russian souvenirs matreshka dolls are the most popular ones. This wooden nesting doll is decorated by a colorful shawl and one can find inside it many more smaller dolls in the same colorful pattern. There are some matreshka dolls which contain progressively 20-30 smaller sister - dolls but these matreshkas are very expensive. First time matreshka dolls came into market was the end of the 19th century and at that time they were made only of 8 pieces. When matreshka dolls were presented to the International Exhibition in Paris they became extremely popular. Lately these dolls come out in different fashions and have different designs. For example, some matreshka dolls represent Russian politicians (Lenin, Stalin etc) or American presidents (Mr. Bush and others).
Designer style 'Khokhloma' appeared in Russia about three centuries ago and up to nowadays Khokhloma wooden souvenirs are lavishly decorated by the same rich golden, red & black paint of true Russian floral pattern. As a rule one can easily find kitchen utensils made in Khokhloma style on the market - plates, salad-bowls, cups, spoons and other items of everyday use. There is a great variety of Khokhloma household articles decorated in the same style though each pattern has its own perculiarity & charm. Khokhloma souvenirs are very popular in this country and are widely used for decoration as well as in everyday life.
