When the fourth cablelift has brought you near to the top of Mount Achun, you can walk around over the rim or towards the top of this mountain that reaches around 2.400 meters. The views are spectacular and see towards the heart of the Caucasus (no, Mount Elbrus can not be seen from here). To prevent some irritation one has to reckon with a...more
An adventure on itself is the winding road that leads to Krasnaya Polyana from the Black Sea coast at Sochi-Adler. Along the way, the road passes through a narrow canyon and the narrow road gives spectacular views into the white rocked bed of the river Mzymta that presses itself through the mountains. Sadly enough one is not allowed to stop along...more
A definate MUST in Krasnaya Polyana is to go up by cablelift to enjoy the magnificent view onto the surrounding snowcapped mountains, into Georgia (Abkhazia) and in the valley below where the colourful houses of Kranaya Polyana attract the eye. Up here the temperatures are fresh and the specific alpine flower holds dazzling beauty. The ride in the...more
While on the way to Krasnaya Polyana (in the outskirts of Adler - also see my webpage on this place) Russia's largest trout farm can be visited, here in the mountain place itself all restaurants offer you this mountain river delicasy. Prepared in various ways, the soft white meat of the "forel" (as we call it in Europe) is very tasty and often...more
I seriously didn't expect the food to be all that good. After all, I thought, it's a mountain and it must be pretty hard to deliver food there, but I was mistaken. They managed to bring all the necessary food and it turned out to be delicious.Basically, you can order anything you want, from poridge/toasts and juice for breakfast to steak and wine...more
Krasnaya Polyana can only be reached by road. Therefore from Sochi Adler one can either take public transport or let a car drive through the mountains.
On parking places along the road to Krasnaya Polyana one can find several entertainment. One can be found in my "Warning & Dangers"tips, but another unhurtful form is a dress up party to be photographed as a Caucasian goatherder. These mountainpeople are surrounded with stories and were the first inhabitants in the rough terrain plus still live here in remote valleys and high plains. Price is only a hundred roubles and will give you a original souvenir to take home.
On the road to Krasnaya Polyana (and throughout the whole touristic area along the Black Sea) one finds people that for money will allow you to be photographed with certain animals. Along the sea this can be parrots, falcons and donkeys, which still can be seen as a somewhat dubious kind of honest earning money. However, along the road to Krasnaya Polyana we met people that did exploit a black bear in the same way. Chained (and obviously drugged) one could sit alongside it for a picture. The small bear wasn't even a local sort (according to the appearance it was a Ringbear) so didn't even fit in the Caucasus environment. With some doubts we eventually still choose to be photographed with a Caucasian vulture.
If you don't have any special gear, you'll be able to rent everything from skiboots to wollen jackets.
Don't go for expensive clothes, take the most comfortable things you got. No high heels. ;)
Toiletries and Medical Supplies: You'll need some, if you're an avid beginner. I didn't take anything, but my friends fetched ointments for bruises and strains
Photo Equipment: Take the biggest memory card you have! Or better even two. You'll be taking pics of just about everything in your sight.
Around Krasnaya POlyana are several spots where mineral water is available. Not only for "industrial" use to sell in masses and towards Moskwa, but also to fill up your own bottles with the healthy cool spa-water. Most known in the vicinity of Krasnaya Polyana is the source of Narzan along the "malinki Mzymta". One passes this place when driving...more
Krasnaya Polyana has a few churches atht - for foreign visitors - are always nice to see and visit. When entering the village one passes the first and others are in the centre and along the winding road to the mountain place. These last are in remote area's, ment as chapels that give complete silence to the holy prayers. Often, the places where...more
Another possibility of a extreme sport is rafting on the river Mzymta that comes from Krasnaya Polyana, where the "mailinki (small) Mzymta" meets the "bolshaya (big) Mzymta". The river is known to be very changing. One moment it's a peaceful mountain creek and suddenly (after hard rain in the mountains) is swells up to be a all destructive force of...more
If you like to fly, here's an option that will not cost you a fortune. In the European alpes, as well as - no doubt - in various other places in the expensive "Western" world, prices to go parapenting exceed to hundreds of euro's. Here one can enjoy flying down the mountain for just a lousy 70 euro ... including the ticket to go up the mountain by...more
Though wintersport facilities in Krasnaya Polyana are only in a early developing fase, the start looks quite promissing. As first real wintersport holiday resort of Russia. Hotels and other facility were there because of the mountainous and natural environment, that already attracted people, but now cablelifts follow. Silently Russia dreams to...more
It's certainly necessary to visit the third level of the mountain hoist, which is one of the tops. The trip is long, though, it took us about 40 minutes to go up and then about 50 to reach the parking again. At first, it's all cool. You just sit there, admiring the view to your left and to your right, you even look at other people go up or down,...more
