Krymsk Things to Do

  • Airplane

At the entrance to Krymsk there is a plane of Great Domestic war times. During this war cruel fights were conducted with German aggressors here. This monument was erected in honor of the Soviet aircraft.

  • The beloved Russian forests

Russians love the outdoors. Forests are frequently visited to gather fruits of nature (that can varie from nuts to mushrooms). Therefor one should follow the Russians and go to the forest (no, not a park inside Moskwa or Saint Petersburg, I realy mean the forest) well out of range from a mayor town. The peace and quiet that one can find here is...

Shasliek is the Russian variant of the barbecue. However, it is realy becoming perfect when you are invited in natural settings. In the full variant one starts with chopping wood and building a campfire. Then the shasliekpins are prepared with (porc)meat and grilled on top. Besides the meat one grills vegetables and potatoes to create a wonderful meal that - after forestwalks or games - is strengthening yourself to prepare for ... a Russian traditional "Banya"! (see local customs). In the Krasnodarskiji Kraj the perfect Shasliek is drenched with a red wine and of course, at the table the glasses are continuously filled with wine to be toasting until it is late.

For shasliek (and banya) you need wood.

Krymsk Transportation

Taxi's in Krymsk and most places in Southern Russia are plentiful. But there are two types that I found in Krymsk. One is the officially licensed legal taxi's plainly marked and with meters. Another is the guy that pulls up to you in his beat up Lada, asks where you are going and you then haggle a price. Once agreed verbally, you're off.

    Krymsk, near hospital.

Krymsk Shopping

There is nothing American about shopping in Krymsk or the surrounding area. No Wal-marts or supermarkets. There are specialty stores, like jewelery, cameras/picture developing, kitchenware, etc. There are slightly larger places that sell stereos, washing machines, etc. Grocery stores are called magasins and are usually quite small but well stocked. The center of business in Krymsk and most towns is the Bazaar. Somewhat like a large flea market. You can find almost anything, from clothes to food.

That Russians love sauna might already be known. Let me tell you about the pleasure that I had in the forest near Krymsk and how a "Banya" is taken.
We were here with friends and after a great shasliek we went to have a "banya". The little house (see picture) was already heated and typical is the bucket filled with water in which a bundle of (oak or berch-tree) branches are soaked. When one is together inside the water is shaken of the leaves and branches on top of the hot coals and a aromatic hot cloud is filling the small room. Then one goes outside in the forest and cools down, to return again in the heat. This one does appr. three times before "the beating starts" - hahaha. Laying on your belly the branches are used to give eachother "massages" (it at first however looked like a sado-masochistic way of cooling one anothers aggression). The last fase consists of a dip in the icecold water of the creek that was running along our little banya-house. Whatever the questions in my head were of the "massage", the experience was one to be never forgotten and ... repeated again and again.

Krymsk Warnings and Dangers

The lingual problem is explaned in other pages. Here I want to place a little warning for a danger that comes from within the Krasnodarskiji Kraj. This province has something that brings economical stability and even wealth to the area: OIL!
But the shadwoy side is the fact that installations used are old and badly maintained. Oil is leaking out of pipes and around some pumpinginstallations are little lakes of the highly polution black gold. Hopefully one realises soon that one should do something about this disaster for the oh-so beautiful Russian nature. Also the polution of left behind garbage is something that I can't understand. Russians love their "motherland" but some treat her in a way that leaves a mess for the next visitor and generation. Please, take care of this beautiful land and make a start with it now!

    Oil-pumping-installation (a pretty good one)

The guys from the campsite were (pleasantly surprised to welcome a Dutchman for the first time on their campground. Only few times before were there non-Russians on their place in the forest. Going deeper into the forest one realy has the feeling to become one with nature as it used to be long long time ago. Around you the trees, the rocks, the water running and nothing ... nothing gives you the idea of civilisation around. Return to nature ... here it still excists and I hope it will be in the future.

  • Get together with family and friends

Getting together in one place with a large number of family and friends. It seems that this is a big part of life in Southern Russia. It is always a great time. Be ready to do some toasting and drinking. Every place has a shot glass. The Russian men WILL toast to something, and many times, mostly for family health, to a certain individual or...
