Saint Michael's church and more Russian Orthodox

Sochi in total has five (larger) churches. One brand new is being built in the outskirts towards Dagmoys. The most famous is however the Saint Michael church, as it is on top of a hill right across the street of Morskoie Vokzal. The church is gracefully white with black domed and tentshaped roofs. The inside holds a breathtaking colourful scenery. Beautiful wall paintaings and iconostace and the traditional mystical Russian Orthodox atmosphere. Pay respect by falling into the praying ceremony. The church is continuously used by the Russians from Sochi, but also many tourists and pelgrims from around the (huge) country.

Your arrival in Sochi or not, go to the station!

Sochi Vokzal, the most beautiful station I ever sa

The station in Sochi can hardly be just called a station. Sochi Vokzal is a masterpiece of architecture and warmly welcomes all visitors that arrive by train. The graceful tower with clock is surrounded with palmtrees that compete with it's height (and loose). The hall ways are decorated with classic lantarns and slim columns that lift the roof. Truely the most beautiful station I ever saw.

Sochi theatre, a collosal but beautiful building
    1 more image

Italy has it's Venice Film Festival and the most famous one is no doubt in Cannes (France). Russia however has it's own film industry, creating many masterpieces of high standard films (sadly (and dumb) enough often only in Russian language, thus without or with limited success outside Russia). In Sochi a yearly Film Festival is bringing all stars from this world together. This festival is held in the enormous building of the Sochi Theatre. A collosal structure surrounded by almost a hundred columns.

The parks and palaces of the Sanatorii

Perfectly situated in a wonderful green park

You do not need to stay in one to enjoy them. Along the Kurortnii Prospekt are the famous Sochi Sanatorii. These health hotels and hospitals are there already for over a hundred years. First for the rich and famous, then for the communist party members and now for the somewhat more wealthy tourists and new Russians. The buildings can be described as amazing palaces in beautiful parks or huge mansions, romantic villa's etc. It's a lust for eye to visit a few and walk around in the surrounding parks. Often from the terraces of the sanatoriums, views over the Black Sea are spectacular.

The boulevard, a whole world on itself

    by Pavlik_NL Written Sep 24, 2005

A lively place, the Sochi Sea boulevard

Sochi's beach boulevard is a long entertaining road full of funny and shocking surprises. Shops offer the strangest things and restaurant a wide variations of food from any place in the world. Sadly some people make money by exploitation of wild animals (even young lion cups, bears and crocodiles). On the other hand my personal recommendation is to take classic pictures in Russian costumes. A delightful souvenir for at home.

Well, of course, the seaside and beach

Ilja with daddies head, summerfun on the beach

Sochi is famous as beach resort, so let's not forget that what it's all about. Stretching out on the seaside of the main boulevard are the rocky beaches of Sochi. For those who expect sand, tough luck ... you will hardly find any sandy beaches along the Sochi coastline. Chairs and parasols are however available (for about a hundred roubles) and the water is warm (28 degrees Celsius in the end of summer). Along the boulevard are also some aqua parks for those who'ld rather swim in sweet water or slide down one of the long winding water slides.

Morskoie Vokzal, the famous harbour building

The typical peak of Morskoie Vokzal in Sochi
    2 more images

Many public transport buildings were created in Sowyet times, but this one was built before and set the tone for the others. The Morksoie Vokzal (literally it means "harbour station") is a magnificent architecture in serene yellow colours rising up in the sky with it's long peak. On top the traditional (red) star and around it side wings with enormous passages of columns. The building screens of the small, but quite important, harbour of Sochi, where sailing and small passenger ships come in from the Black Sea.

Another park in Sochi is Park Riviera. This park with many palmtrees, green fields, flowerbeds and even a little bamboo forest, is free of charge and offers within some entertainment. There are go-carts, a ferris wheel, a small roller coaster, children attractions, a fairytale house (interesting to meet up with traditional Russian stories and to see how Russians have changed many classic fairytales to meet their own culture and history). Besides this there are several café's, bars and restaurants, so one can actually spend a whole day in this park.

    Park Dendraria, a subtropical dream

Entrance to a plants paradise in Sochi
    4 more images

On the border with the townpart Khosta is Sochi's number one attraction (besides the seaside itself). Park Dendraria is a beautiful park in which several pretty pavillions, fountains, statues and more are showing off more then 1.700 species of our world's flora! In the microclimat that Sochi has, it never freeses and is most of the time warm 'til hot, but humid. This is ideal for growing plants of any known territory on earth and a hundred years ago scientist started this park. Now-a-days it's the main attraction in Sochi, offering a cable car ride to the top after which one can slowly wind down the green lanes and enjoy the beauty of the park and it's plants. Also possible is to completely walk, but regarding the heat in summertime, this is not recommended.

The Arboretum- an original museum in which representatives of flora not only Caucasus, but also many countries of the world are collected.
There r 2 parts in The Arboretum: down& top floors, on an abrupt hillside. Both parts are connected by a tunnel which is taking place under the Resort prospectus. The central part of park is organized as the Italian gardens and sated with architectural constructions. Other part represents English landscape park .
