Though Anapa is most famous for it's escavations and was the largest settlement of the ancient Greeks, the archeological museum in Taman is equally intresting as it gives a very good view of all history of the area. Taman itself used to have many different names in the past and was in hands of equally many empires. Greeks, Scyths, Tatars, Kiev and regular Russians, Osmanic Turks and ... Kozaks. The museum houses a fine collection archeological artefacts and found little treasures.
With the calm and shallow bay like Taman has, this area is wonderful for watersports. Windsurfing and sailing have the only minus that there can be long periods with only little wind. For beginners that can however be ideal. Swimming, boating and fishing are nevertheless perfect sports for the Taman bay and the people that take a dip will notice the pleasant temperature of the water.
Equipment: As equipment is mostly not available you have to take things yourself. Renting is one of these things that still has to develop in touristic spots of Russia.
Taman hides a little secret. Not so much known by people outside this area, but realy attractive is the little Russian Orthodox church that shows the Greek historical influence in this region. Built like a tempel with large columns and in the (Greek) traditional colours of light blue and white, it is surely worth a visit. From Anapa (popular bathingresort, there are nowadays special trips organised to this church.
Fondest memory: Inside is the always mysterious and exotic atmosphere of the Russian Orthodox Churches with it's many silver/gold icons and dimmed candlelight.
