The Markotkh is a low 90 km-long mountain range in the extreme northwest of the Greater Caucasus. It is located parallel to the Black Sea coastline and encircles the Tsemes Bay and the Gelendzhik Bay.
Its Markotkh name translates from the Adyghe language as "blueberry".
We climbed up the Mount Ploskaya in August of 1988 to enjoy the wonderful view at the Gelendzhik Bay. He was only 11 years old but he could easily climb the mountain with me though it was difficult for my younger son Andrey (9 years old) and he stayed on the half of the climb with Irina waiting for us when we come back. It took us 2 hours to complete climbing from the beach of the bay (0 meter level) to the top of the mountain which has an elevation of 762 metres.
The Park of Southern Cultures Garden is located in Adler at river Mzymta's left bank.
It is another Dendrarium Park collected more than 5,500 plant species from all over the world, blossoming round the year.
It was established in 1910 by general Drachevsky on the territory of his estate “Sluchainoye (happenstance)”.
I spent two summers there in 1962 and 1963. My last visit was in 2000. You can see me with colleagues on the photo in the park at the tree with 1.5 meter in diameter.
You can watch my 4 min 09 sec Video Sochi Adler out of my Youtube channel or here on VT.
The Gelendzhik Bay is located on the Russian coast of the Black Sea to the southeast of the Tsemes Bay between the capes Tonkiy (Thin) and Tolstyi (Thick).
You can see the Bay on my photo from the Markotkh Range.
Mount Akhun is the highest Greater Sochi coastal point famous as the best panoramic view of the city.

The Western Caucasus is a western region of the Caucasus in Southern Russia, extending from the Black Sea to Mount Elbrus.
Irina visited that area in 1974 when she made a hike over the Western Caucasus from Maykop to Dagomys. We also visited Krasnaya Polyana in 1977 which is a part of the Caucasian State Nature Biosphere Reserve.
You can see the views over the Western Caucasus from Mount Akhun taken in 2000.
Michail Chernigovsky’s Church was built on the Tonkiy Mys’ (Thin Cape) at the Gelendzhik Bay in 1910-1912 by architecture V.Pokrovsky. It was used in various purposes after 1917 until it was almost destroyed during WWII. We saw it in 1988 as a ruin (on my photo). It was rebuilt in the end of 1990th though it lost its original appearance.
The great advantage of Krasnaya Polyana is the presence the heliport on the territory of the resort. This allows you to get quickly to Krasnaya Polyana, if necessary. Besides that the helicopter is used for the amazing flights over the mountains. The helicopter lands on a high plateau. It offers a magnificent view at the set of vertices lying at its feet.
We had such a flight in August of 1977. It cost only 2 rubles ($3) in that time. Amazing?
Novorossiysk has the largest port of Russia and the largest port of the Black
Sea including a passenger port, a cargo port and an oil harbor.
In 1943, on the night of February 4, to the south of Novorossiysk, close to
Myskhako's region 274 seamen protected an area that is now known as ?the Small
Land"? The defense lasted for 225 days, before city was liberated from Nazi
invaders . On September 16 the city was completely liberated by the Soviet Army.
On September 14, 1973 in commemoration of the 30th anniversary of the defeat of
Nazi armies and for the protection of the North Caucasus an honorary title of
the Hero City was conferred to Novorossiysk.
In Krasnodarsky Territory you can see a lot of natural sights.
The Guamsky Gorge is one of the most beautiful places in the area.
Here it is possible to use a narrow-gage railway and to admire the beauty of the
The Guamsky gorge — the gorge of the river Kurdzhips located on a site between villages Mezmay and Guamka in Apsheron territory
Depth of a canyon reaches 20 meters, and its length makes 350-400 meters. The river White roars and foams in this narrow stone corridor. The canyon shares the automobile bridge on 2 parts. Above the bridge the canyon is most spectacular. This is reason here is the main observation decks .
Lago-Naki is very popular winter resort in Krasnodar Territory.
Here you can find many interesting things to enjoy: skiing , sledging, mountain
skiing, snowboarding, waterfalls, horse rides, etc ........
Sochi, the bathingresort on the Black sea. Here many Sovjet and Russian political leaders had and have their summerhouses. The palmboulevard is almost un-Russian and a lust for the eye. Sochi is beautifully situated between the high mountains of the Kaukasus and the sea itself. Sochi has many good and friendly hotels (finally!) that make a stay comfortable. The botanical gardens are filled with plants that proove the subtropical climat that this region of Russia has. Snow is hardly seen here and swimming in the busy Newyears-eve (the biggest party in Russia) is not that special.
A drive of less then a hundred kilometres into the mountains brings you to the number one ski-resort of Russia: Krasna Pollana. Here facilities are good and many ski-pistes are waiting for the wintersporters.
For more quiet spots along the Black Sea coast, you can enjoy a stay in Tuapse or Gelinchik or many small villages. The further North you go, the lower the mountains in the backland and the more wineyards in between the hills. Anapa can be considered the capitol of Kuban-wine.
On territory of Krasnodarsky Kray so many interesting places . One of them is of course waterfalls. One of them is Gebiusskie waterfalls. The road M4.
