    Verkhniye Mandrogi Transportation

Verkhniye Mandrogi is a village on the banks of the Svir River, about 300 kilometers northeast of St. Petersburg - so it kind of make sense to get there by boat; in my case it was part of a Moscow-St. Petersburg river cruise. Let's face it: the place is such a well-known tourist trap that one would never choose to go there unless forced to go there...

  • Craftspeople and artists

    Verkhniye Mandrogi Local Customs

Verkhniye Mandrogi has a resident population of about 40 people, but their number increases with the summer seson, when many out-of-town artists and craftsmen and women move to the village to work. Most hope to turn their skills into money, before returning to their homes in winter, often teaching art classes at various schools and universities....

  • The big slide

    Verkhniye Mandrogi Things to Do

The big slide is a huge slide made of wood that can provide some fun for adults missing their kids' days. When I first saw it, I thought it was the ultimate tourist trap, but after having visited the village it actually looked like one of the least "touristy" things on display. If anything else, at least it was free - which in Verkhniye Mandrogi is...

That's what people should expect if they are going to cross the Russian border in Ivangorod from/to Estonia (EU). On the left side of the picture - Estonian border - no line-ups, everything functioning well, on the right side of the picture - Russian border - line-up from people who is going FROM Estonia to Russia - Unfortunately, we didn't make picture of a long line of people/cars who were waiting on the Russian side. That was some kind of shock terapy...

    Staraya Ladoga Things to Do

The river offers the opportunity for a venue for picnics and also watersports. It is a great spot for fishing (the fishermen seemed to have some great catches). We also saw some people rowing down the river. The river looks fairly clean and is a popular spot for visitors in warmer weather.

  • Kopor'ye Fortress

    Kopor'ye Things to Do

The fortress, the main (and only) attraction of the village, is completely deserted. I am not sure whether it is formally a part of the museum, since we have been off-hours anyway, but nobody lives inside, the gate (as well as several places of access of the walls) are open. There are several underground passages in the front gate, leading...

    Kopor'ye Off The Beaten Path

From Kopor'e, drive North till a T-junction. On the right, there is a checkpoint to enter the city of Sosnovy Bor with an atomic power station. Turn left, and drive 500 m, until you enter a pine-tree wood. There, park a car and find a path to the shore (the shore is approximately 200 m away). The pictures I show are taken just before the sunset.

    Luga Things to Do

The famous Russian composer N. A. Rimsky-Korsakov wrote a lot of his music in the summers spent near Luga. The properties were occupied by a Sovkhoz Soviet collective farm and much was ruined, then during WWII all wood buildings were burned. They are mostly rebuilt using photographs as a guide and were opened to the public in 1995. The grandaughter...
