Dmitrov is among the oldest and most beautiful towns near Moscow. It is only 7 years elder than Moscow and was founded in 1154 by famous Yuriy Dolgorukiy who was also a founder of Moscow.
Dmitrov was built deep in the woods at the site where the son of Yuriy Dolgorukiy Vsevolod was born. Its name is explained by the fact that Vsevolod's patron saint was Saint Demetrius of Thessaloniki. In Russian, he is called ([dimitri solunski] 'Dimitri of Saloniki').
You may watch my high resolution photo of Dmitrov on the Google Earth according to the following coordinates 56° 20' 17.31" N 37° 30' 48.61" E or on my Google Earth Panoramio Central square 2.
Dmitrov is very old (only few years junior than Moscow) and the most modern of all small towns of Moscow Region.
Governor of Moscow Region made Dmitrov his residence, so, it could be called now - capital of Moscow Region. (Due to its big size, two major cities - Moscow and St.Peterburg - has their own representatives in the federation counsil, so, Moscow is Separated from Moscow Region).
Favorite thing: Dmitrov is nice in all seasons. This photo was taken at Russian Christmas on 7th of January 2004. It was -22'C !!! Though it was nice to walk and see the town.
