    Elizabeth Cathedral

    by Kuznetsov_Sergey Updated Jul 30, 2009

    3.5 out of 5 starsHelpfulness

The brick Elizabeth Cathedral was constructed in 1897-1898 with support of E.S.Ljamina as a house temple at the prison. It's the good sample of pseudo-Russian style, having the tent construction with a belfry. It was closed in 1925, and reopened in 1993.
When I was there it just opened after renovation.

    Assumption Cathedral

    by Kuznetsov_Sergey Updated Jul 30, 2009

    4.5 out of 5 starsHelpfulness

The Assumption Cathedral is the chief landmark of the Dmitrov Kremlin. It was built in 1509–1523.
An unknown architect made it so elegant and proportional that it sticks out from the row of similar buildings of that time. In its style of architecture, the cathedral is close to the Moscow Kremlin's Arkhangelski Cathedral, but is richer in Russian national features, although it is decorated more modestly.
The surrounding galleries and the belfry were built later.

    Earth Wall

    by Kuznetsov_Sergey Updated Jul 30, 2009

    4.5 out of 5 starsHelpfulness

The Historic Square and the Earth Wall surrounding it are the best place to begin exploring Dmitrov. The Wall was built in 12-14th centuries and is considered the unique monument of Russian defence architecture. Its preservation is in itself unique in Russia. The ramparts are around 13 meters high. You may climb it up and observe wonderful surroundings.

Unfortunately the wooden walls and towers have not been preserved. Specialists tell us that there were eight such towers, and two entrances led into the Kremlin.

The 12th century earthen ramparts are visible from afar.
Their and from the opposite side, leading to the Boris and Gleb monastery which has been preserved.

“The People of the Old Dimitrov”

    by Kuznetsov_Sergey Updated Jul 3, 2009

    4.5 out of 5 starsHelpfulness

You are welcome to admire sculptures in the Kropotkinskaya Street. This street has been cobbled with stones. And now it's an unusual open-air historic museum. There you can see several ancestors walking along the street.

The sculpture's name is "The Nobles", but local residents insist that it's Pushkin and Natalia Goncharova (photo 1).

Next you can see svelte schoolmistress with class register and a ruler in her hands. She has just passed a devotee (photo 2).

He is wearing bast shoes and wool onoochas. There is a bag with some provisions on his shoulder, and a stick in his hand (photo 3).

She is holding a basket with some viands and wattle bag. The name of this sculpture is "A Trucker Girl". It's the only sculpture to trucker girl in Russia (photo 4).

On the side of the road you can see a merchantman with his wife stopped to talk a little (photo 5).

All the sculptures were created by Aleksey Karaulov.

    Saint Demetrius of Thessaloniki Monument

    by Kuznetsov_Sergey Written Jul 3, 2009

    3.5 out of 5 starsHelpfulness

Saint Demetrius of Thessaloniki was a Christian martyr who is said to have lived in Thessaloniki in the early 4th century. During the Middle Ages, he came to be revered as one of the most important Orthodox military saints, often paired with Saint George. His feast day is 26 October for Christians following the Gregorian calendar and 8 November for Christians following the Julian calendar.

In Russian, he is called 'Dimitri of Saloniki or Dmitry Solunsky' and was a patron saint of the ruling Rurikid family. The name Dimitry is in common use in Russia. Dmitry Solunsky is the patron od Dmitrov. I was lucky to see the inauguration of the monument in his honour in November 8th of 2008.

It was founded in the last half of the 15th century. A stone cross with a sign "1462" that was found on the territory of the monastery in 1841 submits this supposition.
The monastery surrounded by the brick wall 4 meters high with four round towers built in 1685 - 1689.
A museum of Dmitrov was placed here in 1926. It helped to protect the monastery as a historical and cultural memorial.
The administration of Moscow canal's building and DmitLAG ( a part of well-known GULAG) occupied the monastery in 1932. During the Second World War there was a military unit on its territory. In 1993 the monastery started its rebirth. Nowadays all the buildings in the monastery has been restored, all the territory is well-groomed.

The statue of Sts. Boris and Gleb in Dmitrov is said to be the only double equestrian statue in the world. It was created by Alexander Rukavishnikov.
