    Dormition Cathedral

by HORSCHECK Updated Jan 9, 2010

    4.5 out of 5 starsHelpfulness

The construction of the Dormition Cathedral (Uspensky Sobor) took about 26 years and it was finished in 1585.

Its design is similar to the one of the Dormition Cathedral in the Kremlin of Moscow. The Dormition Cathedral of Sergiyev Posad has one golden dome, which is surrounded by 4 azur blue star-spangled domes, whereas the domes of the Moscow one are all in gold.

Unfortunately, the cathedral seemed to be only open for organised tour groups when I visited the monastery, so I had no chance to have a look inside.

    Directions:
The Dormition Cathedral dominates the Trinity Monastery of St Sergius Lavra, as it is the largest church on the monastery grounds.

The Trinity Cathedral was constructed in 1422 – 1423 to replace the wooden Trinity Church built by the Monastery founder Sergius of Radonezh. The Cathedral became a compositional center for the subsequently developing Monastery ensemble.
The walls made of blocks of white stone are unusually inclined towards the center enchanting the Cathedral monumentality, stability and uprising character.

In 1458 the brick church - Nikon Chapel was constructed over the tomb of Sergius's successor Nikon buried at the southern wall of the Trinity Cathedral.
