So many opportunities in this culture loving nation and it is all top quality. We saw Eugene Onegin in St Petersburg. This most Russian of operas was in Russian, of course. We loved it, it felt we were near the heart of The Russian people.
Igor Talkov's passion, openness, and talent has eventually built him a cult following throughout the whole Soviet Union, eventually even surpassing popularity of Viktor Tsoi and Mashina Vremeni, two of the most renown bands from the Soviet era. when he was fatally shot backstage at the Yubileiny concert hall in St. Petersburgin 06 octobre 1991, the next day was declared a national tragedy throughout the whole former Soviet Union. His funeral was a televised, nationwide event, where his casket was carried by some of the most prominent members of Russian stage to its burial. It is not uncommon to meet people in former Soviet countries who still dedicate October 6th to the honour of Igor Talkov lietni dogt (the summer rain)......about a bird travel everywhere...about loveone of the best songs for talkov
Each evening we were entertained by the on board professional musicians. These included a balalaika player, accordian player, piano player and tenor. Each evening was a different theme - Russian folk music, Classical music, poplular music etc.
When I was in Moscow I found it a lot easier to go to the expat bars to start the evening off. Most people who drink in the expat bars are bi lingual eg Russian-English so it is a good start off point to get information on what night clubs are in favour. Also most people I met were very friendly and will more than likley to invite you along to there favourite night spot. The meals in the American bar and grill were very good and reasonably priced. The people at the bar were very friendly specially if you are by yourself . Allways get dressed up because nearly all Russian men and women are very well dressed when thay go out.
Last day in Moscow in my last trip. Some hours before going to the airport my friend Liosha took me to a wonderful small bar near his house. Is totally covered with wood and has a ancient look. Their speciality is beer, many different kind of beers. The ambient is quiet and too pools to play with. We stayed there for 3 hours and it was great. Only no shorts aloud.
After a full day exploring the shores of Lake Baikal, the captain took us across the bay to a spot he knew would be great to spend the night. Once we were there, we climbed down the pirate looking plank that descended from the ship to the rocky beach. We explored some cabins used by fisherman in the winter and headed across some 100 meters to the outer side of the bay, were we could see the rocky boulders I described earlier. Like a kid who had just found his favorite toy, I began jumping joyfully from one rock to the next across the beach.Hunger crept on me so I returned to the boat, where we made dinner. After drinking beer and chatting for a while, we went back inland to catch the amazing sunset on the other end of the beach. As expected, the clouds and the sky light up in a beautiful orange-red mix as the sun set for the day.
That evening, we went to see the New Moscow Circus. They give a good performance considering their low budget. Instead of lions you get dogs; instead of tigers, you get cats, and so on. The best and funniest part of the show was the hilarious jumping goats. Yeap, you heard me right :). There was also an ice show, a tight-rope walk, several clown acts, and more.
Russia has a wide range of inexpensive musical concerts, Opera, and Ballet. While in St. Petersburg, we attended a beautiful evening at the famous Bolshoy Zal Theater. We saw the St. Petersburg Philharmonic Symphony Orchestra playing Mozart?s 27th and Mozart?s Requiem! It was a really interesting experience. The tickets were dirt cheap as we had purchased them ourselves in advance. The concert they played was of exceptional quality.
Crazy underground club in a Stalin era bomb shelter. Serves very good food (very cheap), sell localy made electronic music and t-shirts. Best night is wednesday night, it is the very popular russian disco night. Don't expect much tourists here. About 4$ to get in, then 1$ a beer (0.5L) and 0.65$ for a vodka shot. Just be dressed too trashy but if they realise you're foreign you'll get in anyways and even skip the line-up.
