You are considering a visit to Kungur Ice Cave ? Ask yourself the following questions :

    - You are travelling the Transsiberian railway between Moscow and Irkutsk... and are looking for stopovers in order to avoid spending 4 consecutive nights on the train ?
----> Kungur Ice Cave is a good place to do so...

    - You are considering a long trip just to visit Kungur Ice Cave ?
----> Kungur Ice Cave is not worth it.

    About the cave :
Visits are done in groups. When we were there a few days ago, the programme of guided visits was as follows :
    daily at 10h, 12h, 14h & 16h : 1h30 "short" route, fee : 500r per person (12,5 EUR)
    daily at 11h, 13h, 15h : 1h50 "long" route, fee : 600r per person (15 EUR)

We chose the "long" route which included also a laser show. (not very spectacular to our spoiled Western eyes)

Note that the first caves you will see are the nicest ones, they have these beautiful ice cristals and stalag(m)(t)ites you see on all the Kungur-Ice-Cave-images around the internet. These are the caves in which you want to make your pictures... Don't make the mistake we made ("let's not make pictures here but wait for the even nicer caves...")

The guide speaks Russian only and gives quite long explanations. You can make as many pictures as you want (no specific photo-permit needed)... You may actually get a little irritated by the non-stop camera-flashes of the other visitors.

Plenty of souvenir stalls help you to pass time while waiting for your group to go in.

The temperature in the caves is stable between -2°C and +5°C. Foresee accurate clothing.
The paths through the cave can be slippery and are rocky in places. Put on good walking shoes...
Tunnels are rather low. I (1m81) have spent one third of the walk keeping my head down.

    Credit cards not accepted.

To get here from Kungur Railway station, you can take minibus nr. 9 (Take the one going to the right when you have your back turned to the station building). It drops you off at 400m of the entrance of the caves.

Taking a taxi at the station is also possible, price 100r-150r.

It is also possible to do these caves as a daytrip from Perm, using the long-distance trains of RZD, there are a few of these each day. For train schedules check http://rzd.ru (if you can read and type cyrillic) or http://www.poezda.net (no cyrillic needed but not always accurate). There are also a few local "electrichka" trains running daily between Perm and Kungur but they are too slow to be used as transportation for a daytrip. Do check for yourself on http://prigorod.perm.ru (if you can handle a bit of Russian).
