Pskov Things to Do

  • Mirozhskiy Monastery

Mirozhskiy Monastery is located roughly opposite the Pskov Kremlin, where the river Mirozha (hence the name) joins the river Velikaya. The monastery buildings - except the catholicon - are relatively new (16th - 19th centuries). The most important building of the monastery is precisely it's catholicon, dedicated to Christ Transfiguration. The exact...

  • Pskov Kremlin

Very interesting "piece of history" in rather modern town. Definately it is a must see activity.Kremlin walls are rather high from outside and relatively small from inside. That is because in times of Peter the Great Kremlin was earthed, just to make this ancient (before guns) fortress firm against modern (for that times) weapons. What you can see...

  • BANYA!

There are several banya's in Pskov, but the best one must be the one which is beside the Pskov river. It is very small, so you might have to go there to reserve. I don't know the exact adress, but the best way to get there is to start at Ploshad Lenina, then walk to the market behind the pskov pedagogical institute, then take the stairs down to the...

This is a restaurant, bar and club. It has very long opening hours, so you just might want to hop in for a cold beer, breakfast or a dinner or a hot coffee. The kitchen does not look too clean, but that is ther same in all of Russia. Try the nice healthy salads with other zakuski.

The food is okay, but I prefer other restaurants in town. But stil it has a very nice location. It is located in the old walls of the Kremlin and has a nice view over...

This restaurant is really nice. The food is very good and there is often live music, the band even sometimes plays european music! Sometimes there are receptions such as a wedding party, but other guests are allowed inside, just enjoy how russians celebrate life! Leave you coat at the clerk and go in. What a paradise! When you are visiting Izborsk fortress ( just some 20km from Pskov) follow the arrows behind the walls that tell "Slavenske Kliutchi". One of the guides said that there are 12 springs coming from the stone and another that there are 7 springs. Both can be true. Because it depends how you are counting. Most of springs are joining into one main waterfall.
But is not only the beauty that attracts people to the place. It is a place were you can make your most secret wish. Springs have names "Health", "Beauty", "Long life", etc.
You have to take some water in your palms, make a wish and swallow 3 gulps, then spill the remains of water on the ground. The procedure should help to make your wish come true.

Personal comment: I am not sure if my wish comes true- it was made on longer terms....But my friend that day suffered a bad attack of migrene. She said the "Health" spring worked.....

There's a very nice but expensive (for Russian standards) in the SUPER-complex. It costs 40 euro's a month, but i think the facilities are worth it. There are aerobics classes and a gym. There's a sauna and it is very clean and that's worth the money.

Equipment: err shoes and sport clothes. And a big bag of money!

Kremlin is a small piece of history that remains in Pskov after WWII. In 1943 downtown of Pskov was bombed to smoulder by SOVIET (!?) army. It was Stalin's punishment for surrender in 1941. He was very cruel person. Pskov was the ONLY Russian city that surrendered without a battle in 1941 and for the first time in a history of Pskov. And for that...
