 | Petrozavodsk General Tips | Tips 1 - 10 of 25 | | Petrozavodsk was founded by Peter the Great in the early 1700s as a site for state foundries because of the area's rich ore deposits. Cannon-casting works came first, followed by a gun factory. Hence, the origin of the city's name: "Petr" from Peter and "zavod" from works. Since this time, both the industry and settlement have grown. The city was officially named in 1777, when, under Catherine the Great, Petrozavodsk achieved town status.
In 1923, Petrozavodsk was chosen as the capital of the Karelian Autonomous Soviet Socialist Republic. The city was also occupied for one thousand days by the German Army during World War II. The economy grew back to pre-war status by 1948. Leave a Comment

Situated on Lake Onega, one of Europe's largest lakes, shipping and industry have helped Petrozavodsk evolve into one of the biggest cities in Northwestern Russia. Like Northern Minnesota, it is rich in iron ore deposits as well as other minerals such as granite and marble. As a result, industry in Petrozavodsk is based on machine building and metal processing. Onego Lake and this embankment. Onego Lake is rich in bays. The bay of Petrozavodsk area is one of them. Along it for hundreds meters stretches the embankment of Onego Lake - one of the most beautiful places in our town. The embankment construction is started in the middle of the twentieth century. In 1994 the embankment was build up completely or, rather, its other part. And in the 25th of August, 1994 on Town Holiday was opened the embankment of Onego Lake. The embankment of Onego Lake is a favorite rest place for our town's population. All great actions in Petrozavodsk take place just here not without reason. Leave a Comment

Petrozavodsk is quite a big city, but beside that, since i arrived to the main train station i had a good feeling about safety. Of course, as in every city and country you have to behave good, but beside that, feel free to walk in the town or at the lake at every time, day or evening, even late evening, nobody will harm you. There's pretty much Police around the town, cops walking, Police cars going up and down, but don't worry at all about them.
