It is located near the River Seversky Donets about 100 milesd away from the regional center – the city of Rostov.
The town incorporates thirteen coalmining settlements and has the total area of about 110 square kilometers.

The nearest railway station is in the town of Kamensk-Shakhtinsky located about 15 miles to the east of Donetsk.
