Ryazan was the first Russian city to be sacked by the Mongol horde of Batu Khan.
It was thoroughly devastated and never fully recovered. As result of the sack, the seat of the principality was moved about 55 km to the town of Pereslavl-Ryazansky, which subsequently took the name of the destroyed capital.
The site of the old capital now carries the name of Staraya Ryazan (Old Ryazan), close to Spassk-Ryazanskiy.

Call it Ryazan's Arbat and you'll be almost right..... It's short, it's small as everything in provincial town but it's beautiful in this special provincial way... a local promenade which dreams of being Champes Elysees, like every solger dreams of being a general...
Pubs, restaurants, a hotel, banks, shops, no traffic, what else do you need???
Favorite thing: Nowadays the city is full of contradictions, more than ever I think.... Due to the overall Russian construction boost a lot of modern buildings appear like mushrooms after rain, but history struggles to get its place under the sun.... so from time to time you can spot these islands of the past, like the one on the pic, a relic surrounded by new blocks... and I really adore these islands, you can feel them breathe and see they have soul, a real face, a real look in the sea of clones...
