If you're going to Sakhalin 1 project you'll have to take the train from Yuzhno-Sakhalinsk. It usually leaves in the evening and arrives in Nogliki around 11 in the morning. It's an old Soviet type of train. The toilets are closed during the stops, so try to do what you gotta do before the station otherwise you'll have to wait for at least 20-30 minutes.
If you get a LUX room/compartment they will bring you some snacks and beer in a bag.
You have to pay for the bed sheets so bring 60 rubles per person with you. They don't accept credit cards ; )
If you're flying from Moscow you'll most likely fly Transaero or Domodedovo Airlines. I enjoyed the flight with Transaero, they give you pillows, blankets, those eye pads for sleeping (whatever you call them). If you have children they give you a small bag with toys and puzzles to keep.
The flight was over 8 hours and it would be ok if it wasn't for all the drunk passengers smoking in the toilet. The alarm was constantly going off.

Sakhalin What to Pack
Clothing/Shoes/Weather Gear: Bring a lot of warm clothes. Gloves and a warm hat is a must.
In May it's starts getting warmer, but you'd still have to wear a jacket. Also if you go there in autumn or spring make sure you have good/not expensive boots. It gets extremely muddy, there's puddles and dirt everywhere!!!
Toiletries and Medical Supplies: Coldrex, Lemsip - anything for flu and cold.
Photo Equipment: Don't forget your camera. There's a lot to see.
Miscellaneous: Bring mosquito repellant if you go there in May, June, July
