Fondest memory: One of Samara's largest industries is producing the infamous Lada!
Samara was a closed city to foreigners until the Iron Curtain collapsed about ten years ago, the city's industries was one reason for this.
Lada cars are driven by almost everyone.

Favorite thing: It is a very popular pastime of Samara's young and chic to go Inline Skating along the embankment.
The embankment is a hive of activity in the summertime and is a great place to hang out and watch life pass you by.

Favorite thing: The majority of Samarites live in huge apartment buildings that rose up during the soviet era. These buildings are very ugly and mar the urban landscape of Russia. However, in the old section of Samara these quaint houses can be found and not an apartment block in sight. I was told that these houses are very old and crumbling because only poor people would live in a wooden house. Concrete structures are apparently a status symbol in Russia.

Stalin's bunker, his WWII...
Favorite thing: Stalin's bunker, his WWII refuge, and the former emergency government seat, is located in Samara. Until very recently, a state secret, this museum was recently opened to the public. I was not able to visit due to my work schedule and it's rather eratic hours, but I was told that it is located about 37 metre's underground. It is located at 167 Frunze st Phone # 33-44-33 Price is about $2.00 US
