The exhibition centre of the local History Museum is not located at alll close to the museum itself but is absolutely worth a visit. It is in a former private residence a merchant. The wooden carving on a facade is beautiful and the building is a monument of wooden architecture of regional value. This wooden tower with the truncated tent roof and carving on eaves and around the windows is nowadays recognized a 'monument of architecture of federal value'. Inside you'll have to wear covers for your shoes to protect the floor (if you've done much travelling in Russia, you'll be familiar with these). There are several rooms to visit inside which show how the well-off merchants of the city used to live including a big drawing room with lots of portraits and the like, There is also an art collection from the Local History Museum collection and a space for temporary exhibitions. There are souvenirs and pictures by local artists for sale. Opening hours: MOnday - Thursday 10 - 17.00 (Lunch 13- 14.00), Friday 10 - 16.00, Saturday 10 - 17.00, closed on Sundays.

(In Russian: Каза́нский кафедра́льный собо́р). This is an attractive othodox cathedral built between 1866 and 1872 and paid for by parishioners. During the 1906 fire it was only slightly damaged due to the vigilance of a watchman. It was closed in the 1930s by the Soviets but reopened again during the Great Patriotic War (WW2). It was completely empty at this point and local people raised money to restore it themselves. It has an ornate interior which is certainly worth a look. There are two important icons inside: the Fyodorovsky Divine Mother and the Kazan Divine Mother (as in virgin Mary). On 8th July there is a religious holiday in honor of the miraculous acquision of the Fyodorovsky Divine Mother icon. When we were there, there was the most amazingly ornate wedding going on and nobody seemed to mind that we stayed and watched for a bit.

    Local History Museum, Syzran'

by livfaith Written Dec 21, 2011

(In Russian: Kraevedchesky Muzey - Краеведческий музей) This is a small but surprisingly well-done regional museum with unusually friendly cashiers. It's also ridiculously cheap at 50 rubles a ticket. They have mammoth bones, stuffed animals, gems, human remains and examples of typical house interiours on display, plus a temporary exhibition room upstairs. The only downside is that there is not a lot of information about the exhibits, however, the friendly museum workers told us everything we needed to know.
