Fishing

by darthmilmo

Fishing has never been an all time favorite activity of mine, but that changed in Russia. As I had previously mentioned, Brendan and I undertook a one month excursion in Evenkia, a region in central Siberia. I had the opportunity to fish quite a bit during the trip. Below is an excerpt from the day I caught the largest catch of the trip: Time was as though it was on a standstill today so I picked up one of the two fishing reels and went fishing by the river, just a bit past the rapids. I threw the first line and got no bites. As I was reeling in the second try, I caught a fair size trout (Harious in Russian). It was as though I was a big white hunter who had just hunted a prime pray. I even got Brendan to take a pic for me as it was my first catch on this trip. I decided I was on "the zone" so I kept fishing. The third throw didn't bring me luck. However, as I threw in the fourth try, I...

Kayaking, Canoeing, and Rafting

by darthmilmo

Russia is filled with rivers, some of them so deserted that only a handful of people travel through them a year. If you’re into kayaking, canoeing, or even rafting then I’d suggest you give it a go.One of my fondest memories of Russia is the kayaking excursion I undertook. My friend and I hired two guides from Moscow. Together with a Russian General, we undertook a one month expedition in Evenkia crossing the Tunguska Reserve, the Kimchu River, the Chune River, and the Tunguska River. We had a wonderful time!

Trekking

by darthmilmo

Are you into hiking and trekking? Do you love the outdoors? If you answer yes to any of the questions then you have to go to Russia. This country offers superb hikes ranging from one day to several weeks or months. The infrastructure may not be there, but the locals are willing to help you get a guide to take you where your heart desires. Among the top destinations, you can hit the Altai Republics, the Urals, Kamchatka, and various other locations in Siberia.

Ice Skating in the park!

by heplion

Many of the parks in the larger cities flood the walkways and the whol park becomes a HUGE iceskating rink! In Moscow this is true and Gorky Park, Sokolniki and several others. i have seen similar types of things in other cities as well. Skates can be rented usually, but be prepared to pay a large deposit!

Cross country skiing

by heplion

Cross country skiing is popular in Russia and ski's can be rented in many places or borrowed if you have friends or family here. Almost every family has a couple of pairs! In the big cities you can find skiing in the parks and forested areas, in the smaller towns, just go to the edge of town where the fields and forests are!

Fishing on a glaced lake

by Pierangelo

All my pics at original size:http://www.pbase.com/sibirDuring Russia's long cold winters, people all over the country spend many hours ice fishing. It is a sport just about anybody can do. Actually getting to the fish is the first step in ice-fishing. You need a large drill that is capable of cutting through ice that is a meter thick. After that, it is pretty much like any other kind of fishing. Bait the hook, drop it in the water, sit down and wait for the fish to bite. Of course, the pole is only about 15 centimeters long.
